It can only hurt them in the midterms.
Nah. If it makes it through the House and dies in the Senate they can say they tried, but need more seats in the Senate.

When the House votes, it tends to vote in what are called "series" that link votes together. The vote series that has just begun contains two health care related bills and a third unrelated bill.
Here's how it will unfold:
The first vote will be on a provision to strip members of Congress and their staff of an exemption from the changes that they are about to make to the U.S. health care system. This will be a 15 minute vote.
The second vote will be on the health care repeal bill itself. This will be a five minute vote.
The third vote will be on a North Korea sanctions act and will be a five minute vote. It is unrelated to the health care law.
216 votes will be needed to pass all three.

Why is the house voting on a bill and spending time working on this bill that will never become law?
I read something last night that there is a tremendous amount of loyalty House Republicans have to Preibus. Trump allegedly has put a LOT of pressure on Preibus to deliver Obamacare repeal, at least in the House. They realize it is going nowhere in the Senate as currently written, but they're willing to take that chance to get Trump off Preibus's back. Trump is also desperate for a Legislative win, and this gives him one. Their hope is they can ride the momentum of this into major tax reform. They're also confident that the map favors them int he midterms so not overly concerned about that.
Problem is the Senate can't take this bill up until CBO scores it, which may take up to two months. Will there be any momentum left when that happens? What will Senate do with it? I don't fully buy that it is DOA. It will likely be sent to committee where it is drastically re-worked. Will the Freedom Caucus support a watered down version of the bill, assuming the Senate passes something?

So they are going to vote in favor of a bill polling at 16%, that no one likes, that will give enough ammunition for unlimited campaign ads, due to loyalty to Preibus?
I knew Republicans were shite at governing, but I thought they knew the PR game better then this.

Given the effect it looks like this bill would have on the cost of pregnancy should it ever become law, I'm glad the wife and I are in the home stretch.
Good optics to try and pass the Mom Tax right before Mother's Day though

And with it the House goes to Democrat hands in 2018. Congrats idiots. Hope K-street has some cushy openings.
EDIT: Im pretty sure that is the vote on the exemption.

This vote is all about getting something... hell.... anything passed. That's more important to trump and Ryan than crafting a better bill. The yes votes are all to appease and gain favor. Swamp is gettig fuller

The problem is, the Bill is massively unpopular. Voting for it will cost members their seats.
You can't gain Senate seats on the back of- "We need more Senators so we can pass that thing you hate"
The other problem is that they don't need a few Senators to pass this, they need like 20. Current whip estimates im the Senate have 70+ votes against the AHCA.

I don't get it either, and I'm not even sure how accurate what I read was. Seemed really short sighted, but who knows.

I think part of it is that Republicans are generally really stupid when it comes to healthcare policy.
The other part is that at its core this is just a bill that cuts 600 billion in insurance subsidies to pay for a 600 billion dollar tax cut. And in terms of that aspect, they all are happy to do.
