A fascinating look at the Coptic Orthodox Church (Copts are 10% of Egyptian population and continue to be massacred and destroyed by the muzzies and their bloody beliefs). Excellent analysis of the early history of the church, its direct connection with the history of ancient Egypt and its importance as a foundation for other Christian branches.

Islam has been around for 2000 years? Who knew?

Interestingly, one of the reasons that the Muslims took Egypt relatively easily was because the Copts were having religious disagreements with the Byzantine emperor at the time, so they didn’t really rally to the cause of defending the empire.

I love em. They preserved many gospels of the Lord Jesus and other early Christian literature such as the Hypostasis of the Archons that didn’t make the cut of the Roman canon.

A lot of the discrimination that Copts have experienced has been since WW II when the British left. Prior to Independence and Nasser, they and the Muslims there had alive and let live relationship since the Ottomans owned them. Once Nasser got in there was government sanctioned discrimination. The Copts were meant to feel like 2nd class citizens, but still practiced freely meaning they weren't prohibited from going to Mass but things like churches or new churches had restrictions on them.

Al Sisi though since 2015 has liberalization a lot of government policy towards the Copts. Building permits for building or renovating churches have no real restrictions on them and discrimination as a government policy is being eliminated.

There is still sectarian violence but it is not state sanctioned. Copts backed el Sisi when he overthrow Morris who MB, so he rewards them. Plus from what I understand he is from a mixed town in Egypt that has a significant Copt presence.

The condition there isn't to the level of US and W. Europe, but it's probably one the more liberal regimes as it applies to Christians in the ME and North Africa since Sisi came to power.
