The Atlantic: Australia Traded Away Too Much Liberty

I’ve been to Australia many times. I am floored at how far off they have gone.

When the fricking Atlantic is saying, “Damn, that’s Orwellian”, maybe it’s time to reassess.

LINK

quote:

Before 2020, the idea of Australia all but forbidding its citizens from leaving the country, a restriction associated with Communist regimes, was unthinkable. Today, it is a widely accepted policy. “Australia’s borders are currently closed and international travel from Australia remains strictly controlled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” a government website declares. “International travel from Australia is only available if you are exempt or you have been granted an individual exemption.” The rule is enforced despite assurances on another government website, dedicated to setting forth Australia’s human-rights-treaty obligations, that the freedom to leave a country “cannot be made dependent on establishing a purpose or reason for leaving.”

quote:

Intrastate travel within Australia is also severely restricted. And the government of South Australia, one of the country’s six states, developed and is now testing an app as Orwellian as any in the free world to enforce its quarantine rules. People in South Australia will be forced to download an app that combines facial recognition and geolocation. The state will text them at random times, and thereafter they will have 15 minutes to take a picture of their face in the location where they are supposed to be. Should they fail, the local police department will be sent to follow up in person. “We don’t tell them how often or when, on a random basis they have to reply within 15 minutes,” Premier Steven Marshall explained. “I think every South Australian should feel pretty proud that we are the national pilot for the home-based quarantine app.”

Other states also curtailed their citizens’ liberty in the name of safety. The state of Victoria announced a curfew and suspended its Parliament for key parts of the pandemic. “To put this in context, federal and state parliaments sat during both world wars and the Spanish Flu, and curfews have never been imposed,” the scholar John Lee observed in an article for the Brookings Institution. “In responding to a question about whether he had gone too far with respect to imposing a curfew (avoiding the question of why a curfew was needed when no other state had one), Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews replied: ‘it is not about human rights. It is about human life.’”

In New South Wales, Police Minister David Elliott defended the deployment of the Australian military to enforce lockdowns, telling the BBC that some residents of the state thought “the rules didn’t apply to them.” In Sydney, where more than 5 million people have been in lockdown for more than two months, and Melbourne, the country’s second-biggest city, anti-lockdown protests were banned, and when dissenters gathered anyway, hundreds were arrested and fined, Reuters reported.

Australia is undoubtedly a democracy, with multiple political parties, regular elections, and the peaceful transfer of power. But if a country indefinitely forbids its own citizens from leaving its borders, strands tens of thousands of its citizens abroad, puts strict rules on intrastate travel, prohibits citizens from leaving home without an excuse from an official government list, mandates masks even when people are outdoors and socially distanced, deploys the military to enforce those rules, bans protest, and arrests and fines dissenters, is that country still a liberal democracy?

Paraphrasing that young British lad from a week or so ago, when a government can break the laws during an emergency and the government can unilaterally declare an emergency...what's to stop the government from declaring an emergency to break the law?

Honestly, once you accept that as 100% fact, you have to either be willfully ignorant or simply a sheep to not begin to feel like you ought to at least step back and begin to question things after 18 months of this. Blindly going along is lemming behavior.

Damn Australia

The Atlantic is saying you’re too authoritarian.

That’s like Charlie Sheen coming over and telling you that you’re partying and whoring too much.

It will NEVER cease to amaze me how liberals are surprised by the completely foreseeable and natural implications of their ideology.

This is what makes liberals some of the most dangerous people in world history. Quite often, they GENUINELY don't know how horrific their ideology is despite the fact that they are presently the most dangerous people on the planet.

Does this question even have to be answered?

And ya know the funny part? Their liberals will just say, "well, it's worked!"

That's a liberal for ya. If they identify a target problem and somehow, alleviate the problem...........literally ANYTHING they did to achieve it is justified in their minds

frick The Atlantic. One of their reporters will write this, while the douche in the next cube is happily lecturing us about why we need to give up our guns. Intellectual dishonesty runs deep there.

If anybody wants my guns, they're at the bottom of Lake Lanier after an unfortunate boating accident. :(

I've been asking for a year here...............

Is there ANYONE who REALLY thinks that when emergency powers laws were passed, a single soul alive meant that everyone down to the fricking local school board or podunk mayors acquired dictator powers indefinitely?

I didn't realize they won't even let them leave.

That's way over the top.

Here's the problem.

The Atlantic doesn't really think this. The Atlantic is 100% on board with the leaders having emergency powers to basically just issue edicts. The ONLY problem the Atlantic is articulating here is that they've abused those powers. NOT that the powers shouldn't exist.

Classic liberalism of passing the buck for the totally logical consequences of their beliefs.

There was a time when I used to think "If everything goes to Hell in a handbasket here, there's always Australia."

We're screwed.

Correct. Australia is basically making Canada look like Texas at this point.

Any Australian proud of that is the type of Australian that I hope never leaves that land and populates any other western country.

When The Atlantic calls you out for too much government, you've done fricked up.

Australia also just passed a law allowing their government to legally / transparently spy on all of their citizens social media posts, add posts of their own to it and/or remove posts.
