I remember Democrats using Mr. Byrd's death as the catalyst for hate crimes legislation, and excoriated George Bush because he didn't support hate crimes laws. His response about Mr. Byrd's tragic death was "what more do want to happen to this guy. He's going to be executed."

That case was THE big hate crime debate at the time. It was an illogical position by the left. My position on FreeRepublic back then was simple:
If he is sentenced to death without it being a hate crime then maybe we should execute him for murder; then if you want to impose the additional hate crime penalty you can dig up the body and execute it again.

The perps should have been executed a long time ago and "hate crimes" status should not exist.

I am still against the death penalty, even in this case.

With that said, I genuinely can't conceive of the thought process of someone who drags a human being to death. Hell, who drags an animal to death. So, while I don't believe the state should execute him, I won't likely mourn his passing, no matter what his ultimate fate might be.

When I first moved to DC in the late 80's, I thought he was the most annoying person I'd ever heard. He was definitely an acquired taste.

He was diagnosed with late stage cancer several years ago. DC 101 actually let him back on the air to do shows on Saturday mornings, basically until he could no longer do it.

GreaseMan, was off the chain. He lived in a subdivision called Argyle Forest. Going through Argyle Forest was a short cut to get to the Orange Park Mall.

On our way to the mall one day, I noticed a nice house with porcelain urinals on the front porch being used as planters. I later learned that was Grease's home.

Disgusting that tax dollars had to be used for 20 years to keep this piece of shite alive.

Democrat Demagoguery 101--Never waste a crisis:

Renee Mullins (voice over):

[b] I’m Renee Mullins, James Byrd’s daughter.
On June 7, 1998 in Texas my father was killed. He was beaten, chained, and then dragged 3 miles to his death, all because he was black.
So when Governor George W. Bush refused to support hate-crime legislation, it was like my father was killed all over again.
Call Governor George W. Bush and tell him to support hate-crime legislation.
We won’t be dragged away from our future.

Renee Mullins:

I’m Renee Mullins. My father was James Byrd, Jr.
I still have nightmares thinking about him, the day three men chained him behind their pickup truck and dragged him three miles over pavement.
I can see skin being torn away from his body.
I can hear him gasping for air.
I can feel the tears in his eyes, the struggle of his brain as images of his life painfully bang through his head as the links of a heavy chain clinched around his ankles dragging him bump by bump until he was decapitated. [pause]
On June 7, 1998 this happened to my father, all because he was black. I went to Governor George W. Bush and begged him to help pass a hate crimes bill.
He just told me no.
I'm doing this commercial to ask you to call Governor Bush at 512-X and tell him to introduce a hate crimes bill in Texas.
Let him know that our community won't be dragged down by hate crimes.

Just like Willie Horton all over again. Those shitty Democrats just keep digging.

He's a piece of shite. Cases like this are why I keep my mind open to the death penalty.

We’re executing the men who killed her daddy, but we’re fricking evil because we didn’t pass a law to make the punishment more severe.... than death.

This story created big racial divisions here in Texas after it happened. Everyone thought it was the second coming of Vidor, TX where black folks disappeared and the cops were reluctant to investigate.

Hope he suffers either way. Took forever to execute him too. 20 years ugh

I still don't believe the government should have that much power. Another 20-30 years of being arse-raped sounds good enough to me.
