As I do my 270towin forecaster and seeing how states stack up, I start putting these in solid blue categories. But, these states were won by Dole and Bush 43 twice easily. What has happened that they are gone so soon? We must start to win the Midwest consistently (add MN) to counteract the losing support in the Southwest.

Virginia is the fedgov effect. Everything from Loudon County in is solid blue so even if you sweep the Richmond and Western Virginia areas it’s not enough to win. The influx of fedgov employees has forever changed that state.
I say this as someone who lived there for almost a decade and left recently

Honest question, has this not always been the case?

Social media and MSM propaganda.

Identity politics has taken over the left and it works here because of groups of people that are easily swayed by feelings. Maybe because their quality of life/lifestyle is high?
VA-
The migration of power to Washington and those migrants ability to influence the populace.

Liberal transplants. Like what’s happening to Texas now. They come like locusts.
I think the country is simply becoming more liberal, like the rest of the western world. The GOP could have tapped into that trend by becoming more libertarian.

Fedgov has grown and grown and grown and grown

People from California moving to CO(see what’s happening in Texas).

I don’t think so. As the purse of the federal government has exploded in recent years (federal budget is an albatross larger than the GDP of all but a few nations), and its control over other large swaths of the economy (like healthcare and housing), the lobbyists and corporations/groups that depend on that money have all moved into the area.
DC and it’s suburbs is one of the only areas of the country that actually saw an increase in housing prices when the housing crisis occurred.

People from Cali have also turned Nevada blue.

It's the ever expanding growth of the DC suburbs, but it's also the tech boom, and the influx of transplants that came with that.

Not a viable platform. There's no emotional hook.

Loudoun was very conservative, up through the early 90s.

Most Republicans I've met are social libertarian. This is so out of step with the party platform.
The days of the Pence Republican is long gone, if it ever existed to begin with.

Yes that’s correct. Boorish Moralism and Puritanical finger- pointing is now the sole domain of Progressivism.

Only time I’ll agree with you
Pence/Cruz wing can never win on a national stage.
Rubio/Romney/Kasich wing doesn’t do enough or come out publicly to be socially liberal.

It has gone solidly blue. There has been a vast amount of liberals pouring in from Cali and other areas.
That state will not be voting "Red" in a very long time to never. Another beautiful state fricked over by liberal ideology.

The house of delegates is still conservative, as is Richmond.
They will ruin it all though.
