Our small gov’t Rs love protectionist tariffs (taxes).

This was not the case regarding Obamas steel tariffs.

Wonder why? I remember people posting about how much each job cost us then.

The US consumer will still suffer. It's a de facto tax to prop up certain industry at the cost of everything else

Your short-sightedness on this is terrifying.

Your stance makes sense only if you see the tariffs as a permanent thing, not a temporary tool to bring China to the negotiation table.

We've had increased (and increasing) tariffs on China since January 2018 and not only has the economy not tanked, it's growing at a ridiculous pace. Your doom-and-gloom assessment doesn't take into account US consumers changing their buying habits nor US manufacturers ramping up to fill the void. Speaking of which, US steel production says to tell you and IB "hi".

No. Short term individual industry is helped. Long term the consumer suffers. Prices will continue to rise.

Except they aren't. Inflation has been practically nothing while wages are quickly rising (especially at the lower end of the work force).

Its vote buying, period

I guess trying to make a better domestic job-creation environment is indeed "vote buying".

No, they are an indicator of shitty negotiations. The greater the imbalance, the shittier the negotiations. You always want to be exporting (read: selling) more than you are importing (read: buying).

A nation that relies on another nation for manufacturing is tacitly owned by that other nation.

now do producer prices for any steel or aluminum products for 2018

and do employment in primary metals manufacturing or iron/steel mills since 2014

You are badly mistaken.

If we can buy inputs cheaper than we can make them we should. It is basic economics.

I’m so scared. 10’s of thousands will literally die on Friday if a fair deal for China isn’t made.

Because Rs and Ds are like 3rd grade Alabama and Auburn fans. They both only care about beating the other one and have no guiding morals or philosophy to guide them. Their opinions change with the wind and who’s in office.

China is relying on the Tom Donahue President of the US Chamber of Commerce and Republicans bought by the Chamber to push back on Trump and come through for China. US Chamber of Commerce is a mouthpiece for China.

that's EXACTLY what i've been telling "muh fed" 90proof and ib. they say the tariffs are causing pain to certain businesses. well, there was ALREADY pain from the trade imbalance/ip theft. this is short term pain to alleviate the long term pain. ib doesn't want to look at the big picture

There are lots of actual taxes on Americans too. Why are tariffs worse than regular taxes?

Because they are way higher and on top of the income tax we already pay.
