You are correct. There was a quite push to some of the LA Legislators (with casinos in their districts) to get ready in case the Supreme Court ruled as it did. It was met with "crickets". This was a direct response to what MS was doing. I attending one of the meetings and it was a f'ing joke.

It'll be interesting to see what this does for the black market of gambling. Gotta think if it dries up and goes away it'll be a talking point for legalizing other things more (drugs, prostitution, etc.).

The LA Legis already killed 2 bills this session that would have made it legal in Casinos, racetracks and any bar with video poker machines.

They said it would cost too much to over see it....

Bookies fixin to get rich. More gambling degenerates.

Because the freedom to dispose of your income as you see fit is so terrible.

Why does the opinion of the dissenters matter?

Overall as it would apply to each individual issue it really does not at the time, but people of good will can disagree for any number of reasons. Some are down right prescient. About 15 yeas ago in a case about Texas ban on homosexuality, Scalia made the prediction in his dissent that if the law was overturned, gay marriage would not be far off. Everyone said that would never happen ..... it did

Will be interesting to see what happens next with this issue .

For this reason alone, this should have been done years ago. Prohibition never works.

Agree. The puritanical notion that people won't bet due to restrictions is just foolish.

This is good for almost everyone but bookies and off shore betting.

Consumers will have more transparency on the betting and less likely to get into debt over it.

No, but if that activity causes you to piss away the rent money, the house note and disposable income that your family NEEDS in order to operate, then , yes, disposing of your money as you see fit is a bad thing, it's incredibly selfish and the damage caused in the wake of practicing your "liberty" has ramifications other then " well damn, I sure missed on that bet....oh well, sucks to be me....I'll make it back next time I get paid"

You can talk about personal responsibility, but I find that too many people don't have it and that sometimes, it's really not a bad move for the government to step in to insure at least a minimum level of social cohesion.

How is that any different than thousands of other vices?

The only thing that changes is that the gambler will piss away his money on the front end and Guido the Keneecapper will have less opportunity to do his job.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented

Ginsburg dissent revolves around Commerce Clause precedent as Alito's opinion is steeped in federalism and makes even further cuts into the "incidental effect" power of the Commerce Clause.

Hate to tell ya, but all governments have a streak of authoritarianism in them and ours is no different. Legally i's the right decision, but societally and morally, it's not all that affirming.
