Supreme Court could address "gerrymandering"

Is it really done to reduce the influence of racial minorities, or is that just the most concentrated areas of democrat voters, so you get the most bang for your buck?

The Supreme Court has regularly - and increasingly - tossed out state electoral maps because they have been gerrymandered to reduce the influence of racial minorities by depressing the impact of their votes.

Common sense is that when you pack one district full of Democrats, every other district is more Republican than it should be... Like Louisiana

Majority black and Hispanic districts may hurt dems as much as they help them.

They're going to have to take a clear side in this, they will either eliminate racial gerrymandering completely and eviscerate the Civil Rights Act of 1964, or they are going to uphold it (packing whites into districts to form ultra-black or Hispanic districts), also based on the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Those two positions are at loggerheads right now. If they do neither, they are passing the buck.
Edit: The Voting Rights Act of 1965, I should say.

Yep, and it creates polarized candidates on both the left and the right...

the USSC has a major issue with the VRA and gerrymandering
on one hand, you have to maintain "minority" (black typically) districts and can't reduce their influence or you violate the VRA
on the other hand, this sucks away their impact in OTHER districts, thus "reducing the influence of minority votes" and "reduce Democratic power" (because you have to suck so much of the guaranteed black vote away to maintain the minority districts)
a lily-white state outside of VRA like Wisconsin can set a very bad precedent for everyone else and make things impossible

Wasn't Cleo Fields elected and then put out of office because of said Gerrymandering?

I guess the goal of liberals is to draw the lines to include a nominal amount of whites, but never enough to sincerely threaten the majority... but the problem with that is, those whites end up leaving, eventually. Demographics and Democratic policies guarantee it.

In red is North Carolina's 12th Congressional District in 1992. This district was drawn solely to get a black majority. One cannot look at it without seeing blatant racial bias.

His district was ridiculous, but Cleo Fields' biggest problem is being Cleo Fields.

This should be interesting. Gerrymandering has created an absurd reality where politicians now pick their voters, instead of the voters picking their politicians.

Dammit, Sir, if that district is not compact and contiguous, I will meet you at a sonic of your choosing!

Stop the gerrymandering and get rid of some of these horrid CBC members in Congress

It has worked to the detriment of the DEMs over the years.
But hey - they got the intellectual prowess of Maxine Waters, Elijah Cummings. Johnson., Shiela Jackson Lee, and the other geniuses of the Congressional Black Caucus.
How could the nation have progressed without that stellar leadership

Yes, please. The destruction of urban areas via racism will be highly entertaining.

They are not being gerrymandered to elect CBC members.
It's just a bi-product of cramming as many blacks as you can in as few districts as you can.

A conservative board where posts like these get unanimous applause.
They are also posts similar to ones I have found on liberal reddit's that similarly receive universal applause.
I have more and more felt that a platform built exclusively around gerrymandering, election financing and lobbyist reform, and positive voter enfranchisement and security is probably one of the few campaigns that could build bi-partisan support in this country.
Left or right, the complaints that stem from our system can almost all be sourced back - at least in some meaningful capacity - to electoral system breakdowns and corruption. It is the most ripe populist platform in America and few it any major politicians run on it honestly and inclusively.
