quote:And there you have it. The Nazi Book Burning approach to history in the 21st century.
Angelica Hendricks, one of the seven members of The Committee (the group's self-designation), said, “During orientation we had to go inside Lee Chapel and sign an honor contract to uphold our honor according to the honor of Robert E. Lee,” she said. Signing that contract in the shadow of a slave owner, and beneath plaques honoring Confederate soldiers and battle flags bowing to a movement to keep black people enslaved is hurtful."
I'm sure her next move will be to cite a """""consensus"""""" (of shoddy work by politically motivated academics) to bolster her demands.
How very sad.

Ms. Hendricks should read up on Robert E. Lee.
His relationship with slavery was very complicated. His wife inherited slaves as part of inheriting Arlington and Lee was ill at ease with it by most accounts.
The slaves were all freed pre Civil War.
I'm sure that Ms. Hendricks knows all of that.

What is that quote BHP uses all the time?
"How easily someone is offended is inversely proportional to their level of intelligence."

My son received his undergraduate degree from W&L. He loved the school from an academic perspective (he had a number of classes in which there were fewer than 10 students). The honor code is something that all students at the University took very seriously.
His only reservation about the school is that he felt it was full of rich white kids and there was little diversity. Since he went to HS in D.C. at Gonzaga (I sent him for a Catholic education and he came out with a Jesuit education) he got to meet guys from all walks of life and all races.
He always says that the man he is today is due to his upbringing; the ethics he learned at Gonzaga; and the honor code that was followed at W&L. It has served him well as he is now a Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins.
I am quite certain that W&L is not going to change its honor code for any student - it is too ingrained in the school's history. If these students do not want to sign, they can go elsewhere.

Haha reading Ionas well written thought out post followed by your blunt post of "fricking idiot" made me laugh.

GeauxxxTigers23's post was more succinct.

I despise people who deal in absolutes.

What part of "Lee" in "Washington and Lee" do they not understand? Know the school you're going to.
Robert E. Lee graduated West Point without a single demerit. That is hard enough to accomplish, he also accomplished impressive feats in two major wars. They probably don't even know of his service in the Mexican War.

My daughter graduated from W & L in 2008. What year did your son graduate? It's such a small school; they probably know each other if he graduated in 2008. She loved it and I loved visiting the campus.

I suppose my son was leaving as your daughter started, as he graduated in 2004. It is a small school, I believe that there were less than 350 in his incoming freshman class. It is a beautiful school and rich in tradition. I enjoyed my visits to the campus. I thought that one of the finest traditions was that no one would pass another on campus without some type of recognition.
I don't know how people afford it now. Last I saw, tuition has almost doubled since my son was there -- about 60K per year now.

To be completely fair, its seven students on a campus of 2000 or so. I think they are making some noise and getting in the news, but W&L isn't going to cave like that school that changed the color of the the signs on the women's bathroom from pink to brown because a feminist complained.
Iona, your son is the type I'd like my children to grow up as. Well done.

Thank you very much. I am very proud of my son; the job that his mother and I did raising him (even though we divorced when he was quite young); and the values he learned at Gonzaga College HS and W&L University. I am still stunned that a kid who majored in Philosophy and minored in English in college is now well on his way to obtaining a Ph.D. in neuroscience from a place like Johns Hopkins University.
From the time he was a baby when people would ask me about him, I would say, "He's a good kid". I say that to this day despite the fact that he's a 32 year old young man.
I am sure that you will do well by your children. Best wishes.
ETA: Thank God for any tuition assistance your children are able to receive.

Baby girl is considering W&L, Berry Furman and Rhodes.
Some days, I think she will end up at Furman because it has a marching band that she can be in.
Rhodes is closer, and is probably better suited for her academically.
She likes Berry, but is not in love with their campus like she is Rhodes.
Daddy has her interested in W&L though.
We're going to visit all of them this summer with her.

I am sure that you and her Mom will help her make the right choice. It's a happy, sad, and exciting time all at once. Best of luck to you all!

I love how people today try to frame history in present times. I have a professor who said that the Republican party today would not abolish slavery lol. Robert E. Lee was publicly against slavery, it's well documented. As a soldier of that time he felt his loyalty was to his state of Virginia. If he had been born in Maryland, he wouldn't have even fought for the Confederacy.
