quote:Indeed. Rarely agreed with her opinions. But I always respected that she could lay out the logic and thought process in a way that was reasoned and understandable. Unlike Sotomayer whose options are basically “nuh-uh”.
She was not a disagreeable person. she read the law differently than I would have liked, but she came across as genuine in her views. After the seminar there was a reception and she was there and was quite nice. She did not come across as an ideologue in person, at least then.
Both Thomas and Scalia always said she was not an ideologue. She. was close personal friends with both. Her friendship with Thomas predated either of them being on the court.
And finally, I think abortion blame is a bit unfair. It’s not like she could have single-handedly overturned RvW.
She was a classic liberal. And that’s not an insult.

Easy: Ruth was not on the court for Roe. A few years ago she said that Roe was a bad decision. She is firmly pro choice. However, she said that the right to an abortion is not in the Constitution. Ruling that it is by way of privacy law is an absurd reach. She said that abortion rights need to go through legislature, not the courts. Every other nation with legal abortion did it through legislation.
The problem with our congress is that no one wants to vote on it cause you'll piss off half of your constituents. So they pass the problem off to the courts.

I don't hate her. I just disagree with her on a lot of things.
Making it to the top of the legal profession as a woman, given the time she came of age, is impressive.

I was going to make a Supreme Court joke but it was Ruthless and this is a thread for positivity

Do not hate her, just not impressed with her. Hate to see anyone die, but glad we get to can flip the court.

No it was always bad
The Southern Baptist Convention adopted a resolution at its 1971 meeting that supported legislation permitting abortion for reasons basically the same as those the Supreme Court outlined a year later in Roe v. Wade.
It only became a political issue when Republicans hooked up with leading Evangelicals heading into the 1980 election to make it a Republican campaign issue.
There must have been an amendment to the Bible between 1971 and 1980.
