Used to be commonly acknowledged that the greatness of America was because of the fact that we were a Christian nation. Manifest Destiny, the relatively quick ascension to the status of world power, a perfect won-loss record in wars, etc. God's hand was upon us. Can it be He has lifted His hand from us? That would explain a lot.

See I find this extremely conceded and arrogant that only christians can experience "real hope"
Conceit and arrogance have a focus on one's self. That's not my hope and I don't put any faith or trust in myself. My hope is in God and His son, Jesus.

I didn't say that only Christians can experience real hope, but I do believe that only Christians have an object of hope that is real and consequential for eternity. This planet and even this universe will pass away but Christians have hope for an eternity of joy with our maker.

Why? Why is the finality of death so horrifying?
We were created with purpose and I believe to live without purpose is a terrible existence, spiritually and practically. Finality of death naturally leads to fatalism which is a bankrupt belief system that allows for if not promotes chaos and destruction.

quote:

It's certainly less horrifying than the prospect that the overwhelming majority of humans who ever lived, including inevitably many loved ones and/or friends, will be tortured for eternity in Hell.
I can see where that would be more comforting than believing in the just punishment of the wicked, but an alternative is to have hope in salvation through Jesus Christ.

Of course. Thank you for being considerate and asking thoughtful questions. Discourse that doesn't lead to personal attacks is a novelty around here.

I did say belief in "God", not orthodoxy. Right?

He may have been playing for the camera, but he said it.

Einstein's views of Spinoza's God do not reflect a belief in any god, and certainly not as defined in this discussion. Einstein was vocally critical of theism and atheism, and described himself as agnostic. The mention of his name in this discussion is little more than amusing. He was the easiest target, but certainly not the only one.

That discussion isn't difficult or lengthy. Try following it.

What's not to like? We all want to feel special, right? God loves us more than anyone else.

The two source and markan priority theories are based on literary criticism not archeological evidence. Your own link states that. And again, markan priority, does not create any doctrinal issues.

In fact the two source theory, that Matt and Luke used Mark and some other pre-markan proto gospel as a source defeats your argument that they were embellishing on what Mark established with inventions. It rather supports they used more pre-existing but established source material to incorporate stories like the virgin birth that Mark left out.

You might need to re-read the post history. The op stated that Christians inserted the Divinity of Christ into the belief system hundreds of years after the fact.

I responded that that was demonstrably false.

You asked for examples which I provided.

Then you asked a question which has no bearing on the original objection. Whether the first and second century Christians were providing first hand or thousandth hand accounts is irrelevant. The surviving writings demonstrate that they believed Jesus was one in being with the Father from the earliest days of the Church.

There are 450+ posts in this thread.

Much more than that has been discussed, and will be discussed.

Time to answer my question...

The random connections some of you are able to make is incredible.

One's inability to understand often manifests itself by the writing of ignorant statements. For a good example, see the quote above.
