Statue of Liberty pedestal poem.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Umm, where does it say forever? Obviously this is a poetic statement, and never part of any legal statement, and certainly not the polled sentiment of the populace at the time. It was in the early 1900's, when labor was much needed. That was a chapter in the formation of the USA, which we have since moved on, and anyone thinking it was a contract with ourselves or the world is living on another planet. Enough with quoting this poem as if it were part of the constitution!

It was not on the statue nor on the pedestal. NYC held a poetry contest. Some liberal bitch won. So, they put it on. If the winner had been 'frick off, commies' it would be on the statue.

Those folks knew they would have to work. They wanted to make a better life and become Americans.

Now the ones coming want to blow us up or sink us by taking benefits while never planning to work. Dropping 7 or 8 kids to overthrow Whitey. Turn this country into a sheethole like the ones they left.

Great point. Still, it was not a contract with ourselves, nor the world, as commentators on MSM seem to be advocating. It is quoted as if it were a part of the Constitution.

You know what’s near that statue?

Ellis Island. Where 12 million immigrants came into the US the legal way, were inspected, some denied, and yet millions were allowed to enter.

Legally.

Statue erected 1875
Poem added inside pedastal in 1903

It's just a poem.

Libs should be fine with modernizing the poem as they seem to be fine with modernizing the Constitution.

No? Well damn. I thought they weren't hypocrites.

Wait, what are the FACTS of this "commandment" that we are to have open and generous borders?

The US mass media led me to believe that it is on a plaque displayed on the pedestal for all the world to see. Problem is that when I look at photos of the Statue of Liberty standing tall, I don't see that commandment.

Is it on the inside of a room that's on the INSIDE of the Statue? Yes? Then why have we been led to believe that it's right there on the pedestal of the statue displayed for the world to see? You can't see the plaque from an Immigration Ship sailing to unload its wretched refuse of immigrants on a NYC dock.

So much half-truth in US mass media.

Yeah and the USA ended that immigration policy in 1921.

I demand they remove this racist garbage off the Statue of Liberty.

Just like the libs remove Confederate monuments.

I don't think a poem engraved on a statue should be an eternal policy directive. Just like I don't think civil war memorial statues should be the basis of reinstating slavery.

It's silly to suggest inanimate works of art are substitutes for actual rational objective thought.

The population of the US jumped from 62,979,766 in 1890 to 76,212,168, an increase of 21.0 percent.

We were taking everyone in the third wave of immigration after the catastrophe that was the Civil War and to settle the West.
