States have been living above their means for far too long

Both republican and democrat states have had bloated state budgets for years which are unsustainable. Covid has exposed this in a big way and why they're crying for bailouts.

While I'm sure everyone but Louisiana will make changes, this was a reset a long time coming.

Have you seen some of these highschools, police and fire departments stations. Court house's and city halls. The damn government and it's employees are live better off the fruit of our labor.

Liberal states love their highly paid full time legislatures. The pols get to sit around and think up new ways to spend other people's money while lining their own pockets.

USA Today ranking "best" and "worst" run states

Even USA Today admits the best run states are red and the worst run are blue...

Mississippi constitutionally must have a balanced budget and maintain a rainy day fund. It was looking bleak there for awhile but it's not going to be as bad as thought, assuming there is not another shut down. The red states you are talking about probably have blue governors (looking at you La).

Those are cheap compared to the retirements you’re paying. I think if most people understood what they were paying for their neighbor’s city or state retirement the pitchforks would come out.

Sheeit, how about all of Louisiana's many, many universities....even ULM has brand new, very nice buildings everywhere you look. Tech, same thing. I get to wondering, how is all these shits paid for, and is there about to be a v serious problem given lack of enrollment/tuition.

Alabama and Florida have balanced budget constitutions as well.

The reason retirements are so high is because those jobs pay crap (firefighters and police are way underpaid). States are basically kicking the can down the road by deferring pay to retirement.

I fricking laugh every time I see a liberal nimrod talks about poverty in the USA. Go to the average projects jungle and take a tour of any house other than a crack or heroine addict and you’ll find fully stocked refrigerators, Obama phones, free WiFi, central heat/AC, large flatscreen TV’s, etc...

I’m not saying it’s a Shangri La but it’s definitely not in the same stratosphere of poverty in other countries.

FACT. Most red states are net takers and most blue states are net givers to the federal tax base.

Not when state debt is included. California, for example, is usually mentioned when people use your canard. They are $1 TRILLION in debt without the option to print their way out of it. California is bankrupt. So is New York.

The article seems to focus on 2012 numbers. Got anything more recent?

CA and NY are screwed. I don’t know what is going to happen here in Louisiana.

People pay federal taxes, not states. Just because your state has a huge population doesn’t mean it’s better ran.

People flocked to California for jobs and great weather. The state is now trying to tax itself out of budget shortfalls and has a well underfunded retirement system using bloated growth rates to minimize funding.

The annual GDP in California in 2019 was 3.2T, not sure where you got that 4Q number.

GDP is not state revenue either.

Blame matching federal funds.

It’s the nature of any government to bloat, but matching fed funds have further encouraged that.
