I liked his early music before he became so sanctimonious. Before his cover of "War", he would say "blind faith in your leaders, or in anything, will get you killed." I agreed. Then, he decided to blindly follow leftist politicians, refusing to find any fault, thus became exactly the person about whom we were warned. A pig, hosting a party for the farmers.

For everybody claiming that BS is BS -- that is to say, a fraud.
Well... He is.
I hate to burst any bubbles, but John Fogerty wasn't born on the bayou, and didn't serve in Vietnam.
Johnny Cash didn't shoot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
Roy Rogers was never a cowboy.
John Lee Hooker had two acts in the '60s. One was for his black blues audience, where he would dress uptown sharp w/a band. The other was for white folkies, who worshipped "authenticity". So he would dress down in overalls and play an acoustic alone onstage.

quote:He shares w/Lou Reed the curious habit of sometimes writing and performing songs he does not have the vocal range for.
I can understand folks not liking his music even back in the day. His voice is ... an acquired taste
Dylan and Ray Davies generally avoid this

Until his tnird album BTR, BS's handlers were still unsure how to sell him. CBS wanted to sell him as a sensitive singer-songwriter, like so many of the Yacht Rock acts. His first two albums are a mix of singer-songwriter. bar band rock, and even prog art-rock.
Only when manager Jon Landau took over was it decided to sell the carefully crafted image of "The Boss" -- based on John Fogerty's Working Class Hero, with BS's one original touch: the romanticizing of Joizy/Mook culture.

I liked his pre-song dialog on this recording.
The River
He mentions failing his military physical and the crowd applauds and he says "that's nothing to applaud about"
I finally saw the band live in 2016 during The River tour. The music was great. Even though Clarence had passed years before, Jake did an admirable job. Springsteen's dialog between songs was very much lacking in feeling and I was extremely disappointed.

As a long time music lover I never could stand his music. Always change the channel when his work comes on radio. He and the Dixie Chicks are bound for an eternal flush with bowel.

quote:in the first edition of Dave Marsh's biography of BS (1979), there is a quote where he admits to dodging the draft by claiming to be homosexual
The River

in the second edition (around the time of BItUSA), this quote is missing.
this is confirmed in fred goodman's classic book the mansion on the hill -- a must read for anyone interested in the construction of BS's "Boss" image

Oh yes, both excellent choices. I'm partial to this Thunder Road performance.

"Bruce Springsteen's official draft status was Class 4-F (medically unfit for service), a classification he received in 1968 after failing his induction physical due to a concussion from a motorcycle accident he suffered at age 17. Although he admits to attempting to "dodge the draft" by behaving erratically, filling out forms "crazily," and claiming to be high on LSD or gay during the induction process, the physical injury was the definitive reason for his exemption."

Very overrated musician and horrific human being. This country is better off without him in it.

Never did like him. Always thought his music was terrible. This is the only song of his I ever really liked.

Never did! I could never understand why he was labeled a Musician.

I have not liked him since Jazzfest 2006. He came to a post Katrina New Orleans where people were craving something familiar and played a set of folk songs nobody had ever heard of. He’s a douche.

He looks like a bitter old lesbian
