quote:

John W. Huber, the U.S. attorney in Utah, can convene a grand jury, issue subpoenas, collect evidence and order witnesses to testify — all the usual powers a federal prosecutor has — as he delves into whether the FBI abused its powers when it sought permission and then carried out wiretapping of a Trump campaign figure, or whether it trod too lightly in pursuing questions about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

quote:

By appointing an active federal prosecutor — in this case one first nominated by President Obama and kept on by President Trump — Mr. Sessions also may deflect criticism that the review is a partisan attempt to undermine the other special counsel, Robert Mueller, who is investigating the Trump campaign’s interactions with Russia in 2016.

For all those that melted over the Sessions announcement.

Also, I remind everyone that Trump fully funded the Mueller SC in his FY '19 when he cut basically everything else.

quote:

“If he starts digging into the [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] warrant, for example, he may find something really ugly,” Mr. Painter said. “But some of that may need to be handed over to Mueller.”

correct, as I said last week a special counsel is ONLY appropriate in cases in which the Justice Department has a conflict that would prevent it from investigating a case. For example, if Jess Sessions himself, or Trump were the targets of the investigation.

In point of fact, you really can't' even show why Mueller was appointed based on law. A) There was no specific crime listed (collusion isn't a crime - except in antitrust - and neither is "meddling in our elections" and B) even if there was a specific crime, Trump wasn't named in the document that begot the investigation so where is the conflict?

It was an end around the law to cut Trump out of the loop. Sessions should have stepped in and said no. The FBI can handle an investigation into what foreign nationals did or didn't do visa vie our elections without need for a special counsel (or at least they should be able to)

I think Sessions is going above and beyond what is necessary to avoid any claims that he is somehow covering for Trump. I think his strategy is to appear as hands off as possible because there is little doubt that the first strategy dems and the guilty parties will attempt is to say the investigation is tainted because Sessions is a Trump stooge. It's hard to make that case though when your boss has made it publicly known that he does not like Sessions current strategy

Impossible. I've been informed of how useless Sessions is.

Exactly. People wanted a partisan wrecking ball from day 1 and that would've backfired.

Long past time for another special counsel to be appointed. Sessions has fricked this up, like everything else he's done. He's as worthless as tits on a boar.

Dershowitz is wrong here - he has a strong disposition away from ever having a special counsel, which he's acknowledged, so he carries bias to this argument.

The DOJ deputy is involved in all of this, which immediately places Huber in a conflict. That alone justifies a special counsel.

There doesn't have to be a crime "listed" to open an investigation. We've been around and around on this.

Also, Trump and his campaign were both named in the document that begot the SC investigation.

While filling in for Mark Levin on Friday, Dan Bongino all but convinced me that this was probably going on behind the scenes.

Is his team as biased against the people they are investigating as Mueller's?

If not it isn't the same.

So this means any trials will be held in Utah instead of DC? Brilliant!
