In major populated states such as Florida, there is a shortage of housing. The majority of the state land is owned and maintained by farmers who through the agricultural tax exemption horde large swaths of land and refuse to sell. Because of this, developers and builders have to overpay for land. This causes a shortage in home inventory and an overall price increase for first time home buyers.

If we eliminate the agricultural tax exemption, it would cause farmers to either sell their land or pay the true cost of the tax in their county. Overall I think this would benefit the majority of people instead of a small group of wealthy land-owning farmers.

If your answer to anything is ever "we need to tax more," you are wrong.

Pay the farmer a fair wage to sell.

Interesting how the could buy the land they didnt want and overspend on that but they couldnt overspend on the farmers land that they really wanted?

The problem is Mr. Banker thinks he is smarter than the Farmer. If the farmer has no debt the banker can gladly go frick himself into oblivion. Thats the farmers land until the farmer does not want it to be anymore. Pay the man.

It's not raising the taxes. Its doing away with the tax exception. The taxes are already there.

These are the same sentence. The answer is to expand the exemption to everyone, not add a tax to farmers.

The only problem with that is farmers already own the land.

People are moving to the urban or suburban areas...... no one is wanting to build mega subdivisions in BFE....

BFE is where farm land is located......

Are they really running out of land in Florida??

The ag exemption should go away just like all exemptions should go away. Charge a low tax for everyone.

Nah. I'm okay with consumption taxes (sales taxes, etc). People should not be taxed for owning things or earning things. Property and income taxes are nothing more than theft.

Everything ran just fine before the government decided it owns all of your land and can take it from you if you don't pay them.

In reality, that's not a problem.

These threads are always fun for me because i get to watch people support tax subsidization for things they like but then later argue against it for things they don't like.

Frick off...I enjoy my ag exemption It's absolutely necessary because I have to plant corn, but for some strange reason, I always bush hog it instead of harvesting it.

Not being taxed is not a subsidy.
