It would be more understandable if the country was going down the toilet but there isn't any tangible proof that things are getting worse. To have this much negative press while simultaneously having all of these good economic metrics is what is bewildering to most people.

That being said he does attack the press so he does bring some of it on himself. He doesn't seem to mind apparently.

Sharyl Atkinson wrote a sourced book about it. It’s called: The Smear. It answers you “serious” question.

The tactics of the “thousands” of “legitimate” media sources was invented by Goebells and then perfected by CIA disinformation campaigns. It was honed into an art form by David Brock (of media matters fame who worked for the Clintons, and became wealthy “debunking” things on their behalf by smearing and publicly castigating their political adversaries), Sidney Blumenthal (similar pedigree) and the Clintons themselves. It is disturbing what these people do to manipulate what appears in “legitimate” media sources.
