A popular skatepark in San Clemente was filled with sand to discourage skaters from using it during the coronavirus pandemic and to promote social distancing. San Clemente had shut down all its parks and facilities on April 1 under the state’s stay-at-home orders, but skaters ignored signs warning against trespassing at the Ralphs Skate Court, 241 Avenida La Pata. Since park facilities have been closed city officials say they routinely saw people visit the skatepark, even by some children accompanied with their parents, according to the San Clemente Times. City officials told the newspaper they followed in the footsteps of other cities, and filled the skatepark with 37 tons of sand. The nonprofit group that has raised money to support the skatepark, however, says the city made the decision to fill the skatepark with sand without notifying them first.

Why not post a couple of policemen outside the park's boundaries? That would be much cheaper than dumping freaking sand into the park.

And now they'll have to figure out how to get all of that sand out when it's time to open back up. Just stupid and pointless.

You already know this, but politicians aren’t the brightest and best.

entitled f’ers. It’s not the City’s job to notify everyone who may get their panties in a wad

Well, the citizens pay taxes for it, so I'd argue they should let their residents know that the city will use thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money to fill up a skatepark... with sand.

I can envision pointy head bureaucrats siting in offices gleefully making this decision and laughing maniacally like a Dr Evil character!

Three standard dump trucks of sand doesn't cost very much.

They’ve essentially ruined this park for good. Remember when you were a kid trying to skateboard and a wheel hit the tiniest of rock?

They will never get all of the sand out.

BREC took all the swings down in our neighborhood park. It’s fricking stupid.

Wait, do some people actually think that there is a return to Normal after this? That park was never going to reopen.

This is the biggest power grab since 9/11.

I’m not clear on this, but did the city even have the right to do this? Doesn’t sound like they have any involvement with it, run it or anything. I’d be pissed if I’m the non-profit leadership. City better clean it up too. What a bunch of power hungry dolts!

Yeah... they aren't going to pay for the cleanup.

37 tons is one dump truck load, depending on the moisture content of the sand. "Filled" may be an overstatement, but per poster above, all you have to do is spread it out.

Granted, it's still a chicken-shite move.
