Anyone who believes that Russia can create a nuclear mega tsunami with a weapon that has failed every test it has undergone is a retard. This “threat” was made to Boris back in February of last year No one took it seriously then, and no one should take it seriously now.

I think these comments were from a Russian TV commentator, not Putin.

Back in the Cold War, there is data from a sub-surface test of a US weapon that was 23kilotons - this Russian weapon appears to be at least 2megatons, though I saw a source (US Naval Institute) say 100megatons. It's about the size of a school bus.
1 megaton = 1000 kilotons

100megatons = 100000kilotons / 23kilotons = ~4350, so the Russian nuke could be about 4350x the yield of the US weapon for which some data is provided below.

Maybe someone knows if yield and effects bear a linear relationship - if so, then the 500m tsunami seems like a legit concern.

Russians have reported some successful tests of this.

There is no doubt the Russians can make nukes and torpedoes. Can they employ this 'drone' torpedo to stalk the sea floor then appear on the coastline? I don't know.

There is no doubt they could launch and send it forward. My understanding is that it will have "unlimited" range. I think there is a small nuclear propulsion unit. I would guess they at least have the ability to launch it straight at a coastline from a long distance, get the sub out of there, and then some time later it goes off next to the coast.

If the tsunami isn't a real thing, maybe they are alluding to the water column, which would be filled with radiation and rain down on the coast.

Cold War 23kiloton test
The closest ship to surface zero was the USS Saratoga. Eight ships were sunk or capsized, eight more were severely damaged. Sunk vessels were the USS Saratoga, USS Arkansas, the Nagato, LSM-60 (obviously), the submarines USS Apogon and USS Pilotfish, the concrete dry dock ARDC-13, and the barge YO-160.

At its greatest extent, the water column was 2000 feet (600 m) across, with walls 300 feet (100 m) thick, and 6000 feet (2 km) tall, holding a million tons of water.

Stern of the USS Saratoga can be seen rising 43 feet on the crest of the first wave (94 feet high and 1000 feet from surface zero). Waves 6 feet high were seen 22,000 feet (7 km) from the explosion.

The base surge is prominent. Expanding outward initially at over 60 mph, it rapidly rose to a height of 900 feet (300 meters). The expanding surge formed a doughnut shaped ring 3.5 miles (5 km) across and 1800 feet high 4 minutes after the explosion.

This is film from the 1946 test of a 22 kiloton underwater explosion

The bomb Putin is referring to is a 100-200 megaton device. For the math challenged among us, 100 megatons is about 4,500 times more powerful than the 1946 bomb above.

Still hilarious?

Yeah praise the Lord they are. Because Trump was almost get us into nuclear war from his first day in office. It was an outrage I tell you.

But really though, if I had to make the dreadful choice of selecting one person to absorb all the hellfire of a world war III’s worth of nuclear hellfire, I’d definitely choose Joe Biden. And pay them a little something extra behind the scene to make it nice and slow.

Gosh, the Navy thought it was "94-foot-high tsunami." I wonder who is closer to the truth here.

Tsunamis build on themselves. What you’re seeing didn’t. The initial wave of 94ft was it’s crest whereas a tsunami will get higher at the local level. You’re seeing a big arse wave. Not a series of bigger waves. Also, good luck in directing the tsunami when a nuke is used. Apparently vlad has perfected the art of directing the energy from a nuclear explosion.

No, tsunamis don't "build on themselves." Tsunamis "build" as the seabed rises. A tsunami is nothing more than an energy transfer. In the deep ocean there is barely a perceptible wave. In the shallows, the volume of moving water is converted into a large wave.

Foolish folks discount the wave potential of a 100mt underwater blast by citing the far higher energy transfer of an earthquake. The juxtaposition would be fair if the nuke blast occurred a mile or two beneath the seabed, as does an earthquake. But at a depth optimized to maximize wave production and blast effect, there is no such comparison.

Russia or the US for that matter doesn’t have the capability or capacity to build a 100 megaton explosion. The largest US explosion produced a 15 megaton release of energy. That project took an enormous amount of energy production by the US. That test was in a controlled environment not dropped from a plane or launched from a rocket. The Soviet test of the Tsar bomba yielded 50 megatons of energy but wasn’t deployable due to its size and shape. Russia claims it can yield 100 megatons which is more than likely pure fiction along with vast majority of their claims much less be deployed in a torpedo
