We could bankrupt Mexico tomorrow if we taxed remittances.

Isn’t this exactly what the pro-MAGA posts are doing too? Sucking Trump’s D before we know how this shakes out?

This could easily backfire. Mexico has demonstrated a careless disregard for its people many times.

Hell, close the border to legal crossings from TJ to San Diego for a few days.

All the legal residents of Mexico working in the US would lose their shite and Mexico gets an idea of how much income they’ll lose if we close the border.

Meh I don’t care. I’m just surprised at how pro-tariff people are all of a sudden. They are not supported by most economists of the conservative presuasion nor do they have a history of playing out well

About its people? Yes.

About its money flow? No.

Start hurting their bottom line and they come to the table.

I'm willing to see how this shakes out. Do you think our trade situations/deals are all even Steven for both parties?

I'm not a big fan of tariffs either but enough is enough at some point.

You know that about 3.50/5 unauthorized immigrants who get caught at the border are with their family members right?

meh...I'm not "pro-tariff". I just laugh at the hand wringing when Mexico "retaliates"

I just don't give a sick rat's arse about any bombast from Mexico. I will gladly entertain a position that says "U.S. should not impose tariff for _____ reason"

But, this thread (these types of threads" are of the 'OH, shite....PISSANT COUNTRY X is REATALIATING!!! * Pearls firmly clutched * variety

Certainly not but we are are not fair players either. I mean there’s a 25% tax on importing light pickup trucks. And we bailed out our automakers with billions of dollars that have never been repaid. If not for those things, the Japanese would have raped our industry even more. Just one example.

Two wrongs don’t make a right and these latest tariffs have bad tones because they don’t have specific terms. It’s one things to implement very specific tariffs/quotas in response to specific problems. It’s another to start issuing broad tariffs to solve unclear problems. We’re doing the latter.

You can’t just say “trade is unfair” as a justification for any and all tariffs. You gotta get specific. Nobody even knows what the strategy is here. It’s just blind faith

That's just how economics works. Prices will drop which will get some pig farmers out, which will reduce supply, which will increase prices, which will cause more people to become pig farmers.

prices on pork products are already high...so where are all of those pig farmers you think are coming to the rescue.

prices will drop in the short term and will then skyrocket as pig farmers cull their herds in response to losing a portion of the Mexican market.
