I’ve been out of the loop so I apologize for the question in advance but why didn’t we fund the wall when we had majority in both?

Tom Donahue, President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce owns house and senate Republicans and he said no wall. That's why Paul Ryan didn't pass it.

How many times do you have to be told...

To pass legislation it requires 60 votes in the Senate.

The Republicans held 51 seats. As long as the democrats said no it was no!

Technically the constitution only requires a simple majority.

Long Standing Senate rules make it 60

Same reason Dems didn't change gun law or immigration when they actually had the 60 cloture votes.

Both parties want issues for campaigns. Neither want to solve anything.

But Trump made a huge tactical error by waiting.

I always get so damn confused about this. When is a 60 vote majority required vs a simple majority required?

You may have not heard, but it is now a NATIONAL EMERGENCY, that happened quite recently. About 35 days ago.

That's because very few Trump supporters here want to admit that Trump was a jackass for waiting until now. No other answer makes sense.

Wolves in Sheep's Clothing that's why. Just cause they have an R behind their name doesn't mean they aren't globalists. See Jeff Flake, McCain, Romney, Snow, ETC....

Constitutionally it always simple majority.

The Senate made long standing rules around 100 years ago to do away with the filibuster.
They made it so that a Senator didn't have to actually filibuster and could just express he or she was invoking that privilege. It would then need 60 votes to get cloture ending debate and stop the "pocket filibuster"

So IOW any contested piece of legislation needs 60 votes

When you have heard of the term "nuclear option" that was a name given when Harry Reid changed the long standing 60 vote to overturn a filibuster and make it only simple majority for federal judges and federal appointments.

He left the 60 vote rule in place for supreme court and legislation

When the Republicans took power they did away with the 60 vote rule to get Gorsuch and Kavanaugh on the bench

The only rule left is on legislation. It will likely go by the wayside either the next time Democrats gain control of all 3 branches of government

...to bring it to a floor vote. Then 51 votes would pass it. Never could get it to a vote.

There was a large part of Ryan and McConnell not willing to expend political capital to get the votes.

And of those 60, none of them can be Democrats posing as Republicans.

Seriously. Rs didn’t have 51. McCain, Flake and Corker never really counted.
