Rand's appeal is he is the only guy that is actually for smaller government, and that includes abroad
How many US military installations in Europe, Balkans, etc would Rand Paul cut if he is elected President?
How would cutting our forces over there act as a deterrent to someone like Putin?

The Paul family is just awful when it comes to foreign policy

Or you posted quotes from two months ago made to look like they were this week.

A noninterventionist policy is the best one.

Do you agree with Jennifer Rubin's view on these matters?

I believe that's from within the last week

The quote about the Cold War is specifically from back in January.

I agree with Jennifer Rubin that the Paul family is just awful when it comes to foreign policy

I prefer to think they might have found a more efficient means to perform the same tasks.
i think rand would reassess (with an eye towards cutting) which of our tasks are worthwhile, and that i'd be likely to agree with him on a great deal of what he'd decide on, once he actually bore the responsibility of defending the country.
the problem is that whatever movement we'd make toward non-interventionism would probably be seen as (and actually be) short-lived once his term(s) ended. and that would be a real problem imo. i still like him though

Sweet I was so looking forward to the poon pics thread. I really wanted to hear how it never really happened.

By awful you mean intelligent.
The current shitshow of a foreign policy that George W. Obama has kept going for decades is just one reason why 9/11 happened.

I think the assumption is that America should be a deterrent in the first place. I will be the first to admit that I know little to nothing about Russian/Ukrainian relations. I do know that American military forces in Germany and Turkey have been critical for our efforts in the ME, and would undoubtedly be critical for our potential (and unlikely) participation in this recent crisis in Ukraine.
I question whether the juice is worth the squeeze in that regard. I am in no rush to participate in a modern conventional war no matter how easy forward bases might make that scenario. I personally think that without bases in Germany and Turkey, we could have executed our counter terrorist strategies in Afghanistan on a more limited and appropriate scale.
I am a military guy, I loved my time in, I love the community, I love the profession. What I don't love is America's foreign policy. I think we need to change the paradigm, even if it might be perceived as "weakness" at home and abroad. Your average citizen is completely unaware of what our most effective defense and intelligence mechanisms are, which in most cases is totally understandable. In my mind that makes it all the more necessary for our leaders to be responsible in matters of national security instead of chasing wildfires for the sake of appearances and political platform.

Yeah, not quite what he said, but thanks for playing.

I think America's biggest threat is itself.
We are currently spending ourselves to death.
Putin is an ant compared to how shitty we can be to ourselves.

quote:How would leaving them act as a deterrent? Good Lord fellow, you believe a US Naval Air Station 469mi from a bunch of 3rd world tent dwellers cannot serve as a deterrent to their attacking US assets.
How would cutting our forces over there act as a deterrent to someone like Putin?
How exactly would you propose US forces in Western Europe deter Putin from attacking non-US assets in countries adjacent to Russia?
