RAF Fairford New Development: One of the suspects was the first to call authorities

As with the rest of this story, none of the pertinent details have been released. No explanation of what the suspect said to authorities in the call. No discussion of possible motive.
Independent: RAF Fairford suspect first to call authorities
"One of the men arrested over a suspected terror plot near an RAF base used by the US called the police in the early hours of Sunday, it is understood.
A farmer from Whelford told the press earlier this week that she dialled 999 at 1.36am on Sunday after discovering three vans blocking a road near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
But it has now emerged that one of the suspects had called the police around an hour before, a development first reported by The Times.
Five British nationals, all in their mid-20s, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism before being released on bail on Monday.
Counter-terror police said on Tuesday that a quantity of petrol but no explosive devices were found in the vans that sparked the security alert near the airbase, which has been used in recent months by US bombers to launch airstrikes against Iran."

There's a thread about this over in the OT. But not really anything factual, mostly people having fun.
But according to what was posted over there, the farmer was called out for being a racist profiler. Since the 3 vans were loaded up with Muslims.
Sounds like the old boy's instincts were spot on to me.

FWIW, I would put the percentage chances as to what happened with RAF Fairford:
-65% busted diesel stealing ring (see post below)
-20% false flag
-15% attempted terror attack

Snitches get stitches.
I'm not going to say that it's common, but yeah... Sometimes somebody gets drug into something they don't want to be part of. Or realize the gravity, and want to try to change the outcome.
I don't think they should have revealed that just yet though, if they are concerned about this witness making it to testifying.

If you HAD to guess, what do you think happened? What do you make of one of the suspects being the first to call authorities?

Good points, but why risk releasing them at all when they could have held them for two weeks without charges?

Good points as well.
In the system there is very little that a person (especially a witness) can run or hide. Being outside of the lockup actually gives a person a higher chance, if they have the options. Rather than being held up in a cage.
And there is always the possibility of the bad guys having contacts or allies already being locked up, that can take care of a witness.
It's also a known tactic that if they don't, they could have somebody take one for the team, get themselves arrested, and do dirty deeds once they're inside.
I honestly can't say what the authorities are thinking, at this point though. And they do and think a lot different than we do on this side of the pond.

Not much if they don't say wtf they said!

That they got drug into something they didn't want to be a part of and tried to shut it down.
Or
That they thought the operation was a bust and wanted to turn a deal for a lesser sentence.
Or... At the far end of the spectrum, they miiiiight possibly have been a plant. Not necessarily LE, since they'd have had a sting set up. But maybe an independent journalist who wanted to do some good, or have a big story. Not very likely, but it's possible.
What about you?

Most likely a diesel heist, but the call to the authorities actually pushes me closer to possible terrorist plot (the caller got cold feet?).

Thanks for your service. What did you do there?

Good point. Who is more likely to call the police to stop him and his co-conspirators, someone stealing diesel or someone about to blow themselves up?

Yup. That would fit the "unwittingly" term floated around. Hire local dupes. Don't tell them exactly why they have been hired. Someone figures it out as no bueno.

3 white trucks next to the airfield says something. Hell could have been bungled covert op. More transportation than devastation

The fact that released them tells you it’s a nothing burger

Yup. I have a hard time getting past that one...and the fact that the "terrorists" didn't have any means of terrorizing anyone.

The Brits are as serious if not more so on terrorist threats. They are much more at risk and basically have a camera on every damn street corner.

They have had to deal with domestic terrorism for much longer than we have.
Given all that the response is even more baffling. The police didn't respond to the first call until almost an hour after receiving it. They waited 4 hours to evacuate the area where there was supposedly a credible threat of explosions.
