What you non Catholics must remember. Francis did not make himself Pope. The powers that be in the college of cardinals knew his politics before they put him in office. Francis tells us something about the political leanings of the entire Catholic hierarchy.

Francis is an overreaction to Benedict, who was seen as too conservative and dogmatic by the power brokers in the Vatican who were also concerned about the growing kid fricking controversy. Benedict was also not about the socialist leanings of the "social justice" inclinations of the Church.

Benedict and conservatives in the Church did not do enough to prosecute and kick out priests who abused children. For all their conservative theology they really, really, failed to protect children from abusive priests.
I'll take a liberal like Francis who is doing more to address the problem than conservatives who did not.

Geez, surprised to see how quickly this board jumps on board with a communist that has always hated the Catholic Church. Do you really believe that Putin’s Russia has done more good in this would than the Catholic Church?
Bizarre.
Bizarre.

Russia has built 30,000 churches in the last 30 years.

What does that have to do with an x-KGB communist that has spent a lifetime spreading socialist propaganda against Roman Catholics? Putin is a known murderer and enemy of the Catholic Church.
And the US, but I doubt you care.

That’s an insult to Putin’s intelligence. He’s infinitely more cunning and dangerous than she could ever hope to be.

Putin was instrumental in rebuilding the Moscow cathedral torn down by the communists.
He also told Obama not to go down the Marxist road, because they tried that in the Soviet Union. They tried to make it work really hard, but no matter how hard they tried it would not work.

I really don’t understand why we can’t have good relations with Russia like we do with China now that the USSR is gone

Putin the ultimate capitalist. He's stolen billions. He's extremely rich.
Your view of capitalism is skewed because we haven’t been a truly capitalist country since the early 1900s.

I have no idea what Putin’s personal religious beliefs might be, but he has gone above and beyond supporting the return of the Orthodox Church in Russia.
The two headed eagle is an ancient symbol, and in this case it was lifted from the Romans, but it represents the state and the church, one corpus, two heads.
And it doesn’t matter if your Christian or Muslim. Russia has a lot of Muslims, and Moscow has been pretty sensitive in accommodating them, provided they’re not Salafist.
Russia does take a very dim view of the Protestant splinter sects, especially if they’re American. But otherwise, they don’t bother you.

American exceptionalism, Yankees believe they’re building gods kingdom of heaven on earth, and they expect everyone to jump on board.
We also got used to being the global hegemon in the 90s.
It’s also structural.
Many of our institutions never lost their Cold War posture. And they will never see Russia as anything other than an implacable enemy.
Finally, our Russian policy has been shaped by men like Brzezinski and women like Madeleine Albright. And their personal antipathy towards Russia influenced generations of Americans. You can understand why they dislike Russia. Brzezinski was a Polish noble. Albright, a Czech.

I've always held that if Jesus came back right now he'd treat the Pope, bishops, priests, and church the way he treated the The Pharisees, and the Sadducees, and the Rabbis, and Jewish temples.
And the Catholic Church would publically crucify him in Vatican city all over again to the sounds of cheering blind catholics demanding his death.
