Get your General license - you get HF. Worldwide. All this costs 15 bucks and some study time.

Is Morse code still part of the test? That killed it for me many years ago.

not terrible but higher than I expected. I was hoping there were units in the $250-$300 range

For the radio, yes. Spend more on the antenna than the radio. $750 was everything.

How much would a good radio unit and the wiring cost?
This hobby is like Golf. You can spend 100 bucks, or a thousand. To get into HF (and talk) I'd say you are going to spend 1000. To listen about 50 bucks.

Morse is no longer a part of any test.

Are there any amateur operators here? Several people posted in thread that seem knowledgeable. Just curious.

I'd rather just ride around playing cb tag with my Cobra.

As soon as I get my end-fed back in the trees, let's try 10/12/17/20m. I've hit Dallas and Austin a few times.

That is "local" on the bands beyond 10m. Would love a qso.

Will do. Try a 80m loop with a 4:1 balun. It'll work all of them 10-80m with a tuner.

Thanks for the help. I have a Grundig Satellite 800 receiver. I think it might be able to receive some HAM signals, but not HF.

Sat 800

Which band or freqs should I tune into to hunt for some HAM?

I'm running a matchbox 9:1 longwire - but it came down in our last storm. I can tune 40-6m (rarely 80 but I have burnt so many finals I dare not)

Bookmarking this thread. I wish there was a PM fucntion - I'd give you my call.

Well, check the arrl band plan. You aren't hunting HAM, you are hunting amateur radio operators. ham.

Pay attention to USB/LSB. If you want to hear trolls, 7200khz. If you want to hear real operators, tune the frequencies I posted earlier.

I had a business acquaintance who was into HAM pretty big, it sounded like. I started talking to him about it, and was thinking about buying some equipment from him, but he passed away suddenly. He said he spoke to people in China.

ANY band. 40m up - use LSB. I posted a band plan earlier. Below 40m use USB. It doesn't really matter though - if you get a signal sounding like wahahahaha... change from lsb to usb. If none of that helps try AM. Some hobbyists with strong transmitters will be on the centralized AM band.

Here is a location you can listen to worldwide ham (as well as numbers stations, etc,) - it's a shortwave radio from the Netherlands.(I think?) At any rate I have transmitted my voice, then heard myself, here)
