We might need operators in the future, at which point a license won't matter but your ability to put up an antenna and transmit will.

Study up and get your Tech license. Local comms, further with repeaters. Get your General license - you get HF. Worldwide. All this costs 15 bucks and some study time.

You can take Tech and General same night, same 15 bucks.

If you are not interested that's fine guy. I think we have some operators on board though.

You can start by reading LINK - Then, you can use the free ARRL courses online, or use.. I'm not going to spam a site.

Pass a test (or two) and you can transmit on most amateur radio bands. Start at arrl.org .

The test is literally 15 bucks. Go for General - Tech will just get you local comms. Even non-nerds can pass General with study. If you are some kind of super-nerd, take the Extra test (same 15 bucks!)

Cool thanks, this is an interesting skill to acquire. I didn’t realize it was that easy to get into it. I assume the equipment is way expensive though.

To simplify, I can talk to operators 40 miles away (I am in Alabama) or thousands of miles away, over a length of lamp cord in my back yard. I've talked to Bham, New Orleans, Toronto, Huntsville, Switzerland, Mobile, Cuba, Berlin, and Italy. All over some lamp cord in my trees. It's a good thing.

I was never interested in it until I was around a few people that used it at work for emergency services. Great hobby and I’m fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time.

Nah. Aside from your 15 buck test fee you can get on board local for $19.00. Get your General though if you are going to bother testing.

Nellie Ohr did it. But that was so she could send micro bursts of encrypted data to her Russian handlers.

Do you mind expounding a little more on exactly why one might need this skill in the future?

I get it for emergencies and whatnot.
