Lets say an employee tests positive for covid 19. This business has employee client interaction much like a doctors office. A.....Should the public be notified and B......shouldn’t everyone at the business need to be tested and only allowed to return to work with a negative result? Asking for a friend.

Depends on your state. Is your friend’s business in Alabama?

Affected person is contagious 2 days prior to symptoms. Very low likelyhood of surface to person transmission. Understand who they had close contact with. Close contact being face to face (such as eating lunch or at a bar)or in a confined space (riding in a car together or In a small office)for a period of time. If the office has good social distancing controls I wouldn’t notify anyone. If there is a lot of interaction then I would only notify the people they came directly in contact with. Anyone they came into contact with should be showing symptoms within 5 days. If not they are likely good or asymptotic. Asymptotic is much less likely to be contagious. Keep any close contacts out of work for 14 days.

I wouldn’t rely strictly on testing. If you test too soon you can have a false negative.

That totally depends on your companies COVID protocols.

The challenge is that due to HIPPA, a company can't approach other people and say "Jim Bob tested positive for CV" All they can say is "Someone who we suspect you may have come in contact with tested positive for the virus"

In our company, we would attempt to notify everyone who may have come in contact with the employee, we would send everyone home and tell them to work from home for 14 days, disinfect the facility, and not allow the positive employee to return until they had tested negative.

They have a Covid hotline like every state that will give you guidance. It’s right there on the state website. I doubt they’ll make you inform if you’re not medical. From what I’ve read privacy laws hinder a lot of reporting.

In Alabama

Fire the employee

Problem solved

I kid, I kid.

It would be best to put employee on paid leave and monitor/test all other employees.

Yeah I’m undecided on whether they should tell the public but I can’t understand why they don’t go ahead and test everyone.

Personally I would not disclose the name of the person that tested positive, but would let people know they have been in contact with someone that tested positive. It might be obvious, but I still wouldn't as it breaks federal privacy laws.

NO, employer should roll back video tapes, see if you came in close contact with anyone and notify those people accordingly.
