Asking the driver to remain calm in these situations is asking an awful lot of someone who has been forced into a precarious situation against their will and by the free choice of these protestors.

You want them to remain calm and sit there for how long?

Can they react if one of the protestors produces a weapon?
What if they don't see the weapon in time?

So they're just supposed to sit there and assume that an unlawful mob of people that has already forcibly detained them is not going to hurt them as well?

Again, it's asking an awful lot of people. That far more protestors haven't been killed is a testament to the goodness of your average non-protestor.
