Yes, especially for non-violent crimes. We should rarely imprison a non-violent offender.
So how does this work? A poor person writes bad checks all over town? Instead of putting them in jail, we fine them? They're poor, so whether the fine is $10, or $10,000, they're not paying it. But they're out on the streets able to continue stealing from people. How does this deter crime?

Prohibition resulted in a flourishing illegal black market for alcohol with resulting spikes in murder and other criminal activities related to that.
They all decreased and the mobs were heavily neutered because they removed one of their most profitable cash sources by making alcohol legal.
Your attribution of crime statistics in their entirety to the drug trade is, well, interesting.

If that were the case, statements such as “all lives matter” would not have such a negative connotation.
I think the issue is, again, how the phrase has been adopted as a way to completely dismiss the entire premise of their concerns. BLM and ALM both have a lot of people genuinely trying to improve things and both have a vocal segment who is using it in a divisive fashion.
I understand the stance of some BLM supporters (not leaders) saying - yes, all lives matter, but that isn't what we are talking about, that isn't the problem we are trying to solve. I don't think a strong majority of people saying ALM truly are using it as a way to say, lets fix all our problems, lets trying improve everyone's life, provide a path forward for everyone. I think many are using it as an easy way to support simply dismissing the idea that anything is wrong.

The truth often is.
No, it isn’t. And that is a big part of the problem with our society. Everyone wants easy answers to complex issues.

Objective truth is simple and often dismissive.
Your feelings are irrelevant.

Have you ever gone to a doctor who was being a dick and thought they were untouchable? These people exist in every segment of our society.
I’ve literally never come across a doctor who was a complete prick. Never. This was a terrible example and you should feel bad about that.

Community service, direct amends to the businesses.
What we do know is that if we out this non-violent offender in prison, it will cost taxpayers thousands upon thousands of dollars and carried a high-risk of turning him into a violent offender.

Lots of ice cream is sold in the summertime. Murder rates rise in summer.
Ice cream turns you into a murderer.

My feelings have nothing to do with subject. Your simple answers aren’t correct. They may make you feel better but, at the end of the day, they’re wrong.
If anything, and maybe I’m giving you too much credit, you are using incorrect, simple answers to protect your feelings/ego.

Yes. Because when a law enforcement officer is breaking the law they are also violating the public trust. Law enforcement is government and government must be held to higher level of accountability.
Hmmm...don’t remember seeing you in any threads defending what the FBI did to a duly elected president.
What’s good for the goose and all that.
You’re a bogue.

It is clearly necessary to make you feel better if you denigrate your opponent's intelligence.
I'd say I hit the mark, lol.

What does it cost the private business owner if said check writer continues to write worthless checks?

Congrats. You understand the very basic concept of correlation.
Now try to apply that to the hundreds upon hundreds of studies that show a direct causative relationship between imprisonment and the propensity for violent offenses upon release.

Or apply it to the discussion being had here, in which you and scruffy imply a change in culture will occur with a change in drug policy and result in lower violent crime rates.
Hint: drugs are not the only issue at play.
Your word of the day is: simple.

Maybe you should pay better attention then. I started a thread that summarized the entire Mueller report and was stickied to the top of Political Board for about a week. In it, I lambasted the Obama Administration, the FBI, and Hillary Clinton for their corruption.

privatize our prisons and move them to Mexico. Clear the slate.
