Homelessness in America is something that has been encouraged to develop due to bad housing policy, not immogration. If you want the homelessness down, tell the nuclear family fanatics that we need to get rid of single-family zoning, height limits, parking minimums, ADU regulations, and rent control to encourage dense development so that housing is more affordable. I'm sure they would be happy to allow development to happen.
I would hardly call allowing people a new home 'selfish' and 'narcissistic'. Also, no, the government should not be the sole entity to help those in need as that can be a disaster. Veteran healthcare is evidence of that.
I have joined charities and went about as an medical assistant. While I have no interest finding a permanent career in the medical sector, it was good.
