President* Biden’s education ideas— a teacher’s perspective

Public school teacher here, and before the downvotes and attacks, I wholly reject CRT, 1619, and other woke BS (I teach science, for perspective).
In a typical gen ed high school class, here is your breakdown in 2020:
30+ students per period, of which:
1. as many as 8-10 are receiving special ed support
2. Just as many are receiving bilingual support
3. A number are receiving 504 accommodations
4. A number are from low- socioeconomic background (more on that later)
Now these groups are not mutually exclusive, i.e., one can be a non native speaker, poor, special ed kid. Right alongside the average Joe who doesn’t receive these services.
I bring up socioeconomic factors because the data is there that if a child isn’t read to by PARENTS ages 1-5 they will be at a massive reading disadvantage when they enter school and will not catch up even by grade 12.
The reason why students don’t know anything in grades K-12 (disregard AP / honors students, they are smart cookies) who have had a gen ed curriculum is they are learning alongside the groups I mentioned before. They bottom line is things like “No Child Left Behind” have effed up out kids is — it should be called “Slow The Herd So The Spastic Three Legged Blind Water Buffalo Can Keep Up.”
Quit trying to cram a college-prep curriculum down every student’s throat. Boost our trade school programs— carpenters, welders, non-educated coders, dental hydentists, plumbers, truckers, etc can learn their craft instead of trig and physics and most will make more than I will in 2 years of experience
By the way, if you as a teacher and DON’T spend twice as much time and effort with the special populations enumerated above, your reward is a license in jeopardy.
TLDR:
Special populations are killing general education and hurting regular education students. Curriculum is watered down and as long as these students are in a regular classroom, regular students will not thrive nor learn.

I highly recommend you find a new career because education is ruined at this point.

Public school problems.

How do the majority of your colleagues feel about it?

I had all those experiences too until I got hired in a wealthy, predominantly white suburban school. It’s night and day between a mid-tier school system and an upper class one.

My son has Mild to moderate level of ADHD...he refuses medication...so his mother and Ihave never witnessed the change other parents swear by...
His 504 accommodations were he got a little extra test time...but he didn't like asking for it...it helped his SAT a little
He graduated with honors
I credit schools for offering aid...and many options in course choices
The issue with public education is broken families...and big government
Bad combination

Texas schools are very large 3000+ students, faculty around 200. Most math and science folks think it is BS. Some of the younger teachers are of the libtard mindset but most of them don’t make it past year 3.

Public school is coming to an end and i would find a new career. Eventually folks will figure out how to make the home school thing work or fork out the bucks for private school. Public education is a cesspool.

This means very little these days. Tired of hearing STEM and what not when its no different at a university these days from any other department. You, may be different, but that field isn't.

Be honest, how much of a push is there for learning accommodations these days? Does the school benefit ANY WAY from the increase of children on plans?

Just as many are receiving bilingual support
Kids should be required to speak English, kick their asses out.

Parents & doctors fault for sure

Public school
Everything else I pretty much agree with.

“Special population” is BS. This should be “special allowances”. Just like every other public service, this one is being abused extensively. My dad taught for short period of time. He called it the “crazy checks”. Parents insisted on special allowances to prove special needs, and then get their extra money. Not sure if that is still a thing, but it used to be in Jefferson Parish.
The cream of the crop needs to be catered to. Not the other way around. OP, we agree that No Child Left Behind is ridiculous. We also agree that trade schools should be promoted in high schools.

No reason why any child that doesn't speak English, shouldn't have their first year in school in pure English classes. That should be enough, and then get them to regular classes. Even if a year behind.

If schooling was making people smarter then Biden woudln't now want everyone to receive four more years of it.

I am a high school teacher and I say Biden is a joke! Free junior college is not the answer. We are in enough debt as it is.

Please do this. I make a nice living selling these programs the equipment and curriculum they need to train students.

Federal law. See “Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)” Reasons 1-100 why there should not be a Federal Department of Education School accountability ratings are attached to graduation rate, which inherently promotes admin to lower the bar

We got laughed at for homeschooling our kids.
Man, we made the right call.

All you gotta do is treat your kids the same. If parents come at you for doing that call them racist.
Turn it on em.
Don’t use words like anti racist, sexist, or anything.
Happy Summeroff!

Private school, I give 0 fricks. These kids are going to be easy pickings for mine.

I am also a teacher. I taught in public schools for a few years but was unwelcome because I refused to join the teacher's union. I left for the private sector and have never looked back. I also assist families who are homeschooling. I work hard and earn less but have less stress and am able to do the things I need to do to help kids without excessive and unnecessary regulation from bureaucrats.

Yes they are. But despite the option for private schools or home schooling public schools will still be there and there are certainly will be more students now and the future enrolled in public schools. Way back in the day I went to a public school - am sure that many here did as well. But from what I have heard it is not the same now.
