Uh, cause some think its the only real need for Gov't intervention. Keeping the people safe is what some think is the only function of Gov't, and should stay the F#@k out of everything else...I tend to lean that way alot myself.

frick no, military members don't deserve financial bonuses for merely doing the right thing. Change the system so the command is not screwed by being frugal or efficient and then you can do your job as a financial manager. It isn't heroic. If you want to have an incentive, lets reprimand the financial managers and commanders that supervise and condone year end waste.

Great news. You can't be serious about fixing our financial position if the military is off the table. They could take a machete to the pentagon budget and still have the most powerful force in the world by many times over.

exactly. We have to fix the military, SS, Medicare, and Medicaid if we want to solve our debt problem. Everything else is just make up honey boo boo's mom.

We will still have the most capable army in the world and plenty of nukes and the largest navy in the world. Our problem won't be the size of out military but the balls of our POTUS.

All of this x10
Was on active duty over the summer, the amount of money being blown is just incredible. As an E-3, I made less than I make at home. But if you're not an idiot and don't just blow money in tattoos, booze, and cars you can't afford. You can walk out of a 4 yr enlistment with a nice nest egg.

Do you think burning through cash at the end of the year is something specific to DOD?

Nah man, I had a blast. I watched the stupidity unfold. I just put my savings account and getting out of the Corps on time and honorably first.

good. We need to be decreasing our army presence across the world. 2 front wars with massive amphibias assault campaigns over continents and island chains is a thing of the past. The army should be a small, highly mobile and efficient force primarily focused on border security on the home front and national defense from a defensive position. Although they should be a resource that can be tapped for overseas operations at a moment's notice, they should not be all over the world in bases everywhere.

What the U.S. needs is a strong, efficient airforce, an extremely powerful and large navy, and a small, but efficient and effective army

The military is bloated with people....we have been on a war footing for what, 12 years now??? the number of people needed now is just not what it was and as everyone who worships at the alter of the market when demand drops and supply is abundant prices will plummet.

I don't like the idea of military pay cuts anymore than anyone else BUT they make sense from a management point of view.

Yet i'm sure you support raising of the debt limit, raising minimum wage, and refuse any cuts to entitlement spending.

That is even worse, another incentive program to abuse for people that aren't doing their jobs. There were recently congressional hearings on big bonuses for a guy who hadn't shown up for work in two years, and was still drawing his pay and getting performance bonuses.

Never suggested it was, and this thread has been about the military, but my comments apply to all branches of the government.

Their "job" currently is from August to 31 Sept to burn through that cash they saved throughout the year. This needs to change and the only way you can change it is incentives to leadership.

BS, you could apply penalties for waste and inefficiency. Stop the abuse of existing incentives before you create more incentives for over paid federal bureaucrats.

While they are at it, they should shrink the US government to pre WW2 levels. F#$*ing clowns.

This is going to be tough to get through Congress.

BRAC is easy easy ammunition for opponents in Congressional elections.

I think this is a necessary move. The defense industry in this country is out of control.

Same thing happened before and after WW2. How did out troops in the Pacific and Korea do before things got ramped up?

Do Russia and China presently feel compelled to do whatever we tell them?

It wasn't that long ago that Putin made Obama look like a bitch over Syria. We'll be fine.

It's about time.

The problem with a large standing army some a-hole in Washington feels like he needs to use it to justify it's existence. Cue Iraq the sequel.

The army is bloated. We are slowly but surely leaving the battlefields we have been trapped in for a decade and the first thing we need to do is seriously trim the combat forces. As a former military man I well know how bloated the forces are with non performing personnel and you can bet these guys are the first ones to go.

Trim the Army...gut the corps and pour most of the savings into the Navy (which is way too small for it's mission) and special forces and we will likely still out spend the next 5 nations with a military.
