New taxes on transit and bikes would raise revenue for highway construction under a bill introduced last week by Pennsylvania Republican Bill Shuster, chair of the House Transportation Committee.

In addition to raising the federal gas tax, the bill calls for a huge increase in fuel taxes paid by transit agencies, as well as a 10 percent tax on adult bicycle tires and electric batteries for cars and bikes.

Federal lawmakers have not raised the gas tax since 1993, and gas tax revenues no longer come close to paying for the federal transportation program. Shuster’s bill would raise the gas tax by 15 cents per gallon (20 cents for diesel) over three years, then indexing it to inflation. Over 10 years, the bill would bring in $300 billion more for federal transportation programs than current funding levels.

ETA: The current gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon (24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel)

He must not want to remain as a congressman, raising taxes is not a winning proposition

The federal government has enough money. But always wanting more. So greedy.

That's the one drawback to term limits that concerns me. If they know they can't be reelected they will just do whatever they want without any concerns for the wishes of their constituents, or at least even less concern than they currently have.

fricking Pennsylvania politicians and their passion for transportation taxes. I don't miss that part of living there.

Worst part of it is that there are massive taxes and that state has had the worst roads in the nation for decades (even worse than Louisiana).

The last thing you want is any politician from PA proposing taxes like these. Even if it was effective the only thing they know how to do with the money is funnel it to corrupt companies like PJ Dick Construction... Where money goes to anything but the roads.

Bought and paid for by PA big road construction companies... Also known as the mafia.

Here are the top donors to his campaigns:

1. Oil & Gas
2. Contractors
3. Transportation Unions (The Teamsters)
4. Construction Services
5. Law Firms
