My point was that "wonk" is generously used as a positive term when a politician isn't very charismatic or likable.

Was waiting for you to get in this thread. Knew you’d be butthurt over the news and someway would try to infuse something about Trump.
Fact is Paul Ryan sucked as a speaker and he is a complete charlatan.

You defending him as a conservative is just as pathetic as the most ardent supporters of Trump.

I've been off the Paul Ryan train since he started becoming a Trump sycophant

"Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. We are with you Paul!"

Do we think he's going into lobbying and "standby" mode in case Trump gets impeached and the GOPe wants to run him as a primary challenger?

Kasich is clearly a bit of an "outsider" and Romney is tarnished. Ryan would be their ideal vehicle to run as a primary challenger to a damaged Trump.

I think Trump will still be unbeatable mind you - I'm just going by what morons like Kristol and Schmidt seem to plan for.

Did you even read the article on the first page?

“Friends say that after Ryan passed tax reform, his longtime dream, he was ready to step out of a job that has become endlessly frustrating, in part because of President Trump.”

And Trump has had positive comments toward anyone leaving office or his cabinet even those he vehemently disagreed with. This doesn’t all of a sudden prove they were sleeping in the same bed together.

You don’t have the balls to acknowledge you backed and supported a fake arse sorry conservative. You just use Trump as your scapegoat.
Ryan was trash when you supported him on this board 2 yrs ago and he’s trash today.

Seriously? He's the Speaker of the House and literally left his party's nominee at the altar in a late October swing state rally in the most populous Republican area of Wisconsin.

He has literally NEVER gone to bat for Trump. In his victory speech on Election Night 2016, Ryan didn't even use Trump's name when mentioning that "this could be a very good night for our country".

He has been mealy mouthed about literally every single one of Trump's main campaign planks (immigration, infrastructure, Obamacare repeal, border wall, getting out of the quagmires overseas, fair trade, etc) with the possible exception of tax reform - despite the fact that each of these issues is immensely popular in his home district.

Ryan, however, has done jack shite to stand up to Trump. If anything (and I don't believe it to be true) he's undermined him in subtle ways. In reality, he's largely advanced Trump's whims.

I just offer it to put you in the difficult position of having to publicly contest Trump.

I actually used the words "got off the Paul Ryan train"

Just be honest. Ryan wasn't initially on board with Trump, and you take personal offense to that. That is what 99% of the Ryan bitching is about.

He went on CNN and took blow after blow for the President. Speak specifically about what he's done since election. I suspect all you'll muster is "he hasn't been beholden enough" or "there are rumors he was going behind Trump's back."

Pretty much every policy objective publicly supported by Ryan in the last year was supported by Trump, and vice versa.
