Interesting thread.
The EU taxes US automobile imports at 400% the rate we tax theirs. They also include superfluous protectionist regulations. Trump notes that fact, and notes that it costs US jobs and prosperity. He's unquestionably right.
Maybe this leads to a trade war. Maybe not. Regardless, midwest industrial areas understand and relate to Trump's effort. The politics of it are unmistakeable.
As rust-belt blue-collars cheer the move, Dems go into rabid TDS conniptions. In this thread mmmmmbeeer and Cruiserhog are perfect examples.
As with inexplicable Dem anti-tax-cut rage, this will involve further electorate realignment.
IMO, TDS has allowed Trump an avenue to similar inroads with DACAs

Just so this board is aware, the US already imposes a 25% tariff on foreign trucks and commercial vans, clearly a nod to the US truck industry. Those are the top selling vehicles in our country. Trump likes to leave this detail out.
We also impose a smaller 2.5% tariff on foreign passenger cars.
On the other end of things, Ford and GM produce tons of cars in various parts of the EU. In general, these cars do not get any additional tariffs between EU countries.

Apples-to-Apples, the EU taxes US automobile imports at 400% the rate we tax theirs.

Is there an imbalance? We tax certain items at higher rates, they tax others at a higher rate. If there is an imbalance is it worth the risk of reducing trade? Hell, inbalance or not the best way to handle tariffs are to reduce them or get rid of them completely on both sides.
Breakdown by country of US trade imbalance.

As for the genius who asked about our trade deficit it because we don’t make much (other than guns) to export.

I was referring to any tax imbalance, not total trade. Basically, as a whole, does the EU tax imports from the US at a higher percentage than the US taxes imports from the EU?
I know the average tariff percentage is 3% for trade going both ways combined, but I haven’t seen it broken down by direction.
