Ha! When they close their plants and leave, I'm sure all of the laid off Americans will appreciate this brilliant idea.

So their domestically manufactured vehicles will become a bargain relative to their imported vehicles prompting a relative increase in demand for US manufactured BMWs and Mercedes that will spur expansion of domestic manufacturing? Boy. Trump really hasn't thought this shite through.

You do realize that the E.U. will simply retaliate by raising tariffs on products the U.S. exports to Europe, right? Thus hurting US companies that export their products. And all these tariffs will undoubtedly lead to higher costs paid by consumers everywhere and the reduction in trade could hinder economic growth.

Yes and neither side wants to back down. So once Trump starts poking the E.U. with the steel/aluminum tariffs I don’t know know when it ends.

If anything we should be negotiating with the E.U. to reduce tariffs on both sides to increase trade and boost economic growth. Hell, we should emulate Germany and do a better job of worker retraining instead of trying to prop up industries that are not a good fit for our economy.

They already basically don’t allow American made cars to be exported to Europe. That’s the point. This is a negotiating tactic to strong arm the EU into allowing better access to the auto market for American car manufacturers in exchange for not levying tariffs on German automakers. Next, Trump will likely offer some kind of sweetheart deal to English of Japanese car manufacturers to make the EU want to come to the table to avoid being left out.

The E.U. taxes American cars at a higher rate than the US taxes European cars. That’s true. But the inverse of that is also true on many other products. The overall rate of taxation on trade between the US and the E.U. is pretty low and both sides do protect certain industries. But inflaming a trade war will just hurt both economies.

England is not the same as the EU. They’re still technically part of it for the next calendar year, but even while a member, they were special and had their own rules for a lot of things. I have been to multiple trips to continental Europe through Greece, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, etc and never once saw a single vehicle made by GM, Ford, Peterbuilt, Chrystler, Dodge, etc.

Some times provoking a trade war is actually how one diffuses these situations where there are imbalances. One side threatens to raise tariffs if the other side doesn’t lower tariffs on something else. Typically, a compromise is reached before any proposed tariff is put in place, or, at worst, the tariff is short lived.

Is there an imbalance? We tax certain items at higher rates, they tax others at a higher rate. If there is an imbalance is it worth the risk of reducing trade?

Hell, inbalance or not the best way to handle tariffs are to reduce them or get rid of them completely on both sides.

I got passed once by a Ford Escort on the Autobahn - true story. They also love them some older model four wheel drive trucks.
