We shut the medical industry down for a few months to focus on COVID. Are you suggesting that didn't have an affect on health outcomes?
Social isolation and people losing jobs and businesses, etc. almost certainly increased deaths due to things like drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, undiagnosed or untreated cancers and other medical conditions. On the other hand, there is virtually no evidence to show that the measures taken had any affect on reducing Covid deaths.

Looks like it’s not a good idea to lockdown the country for a virus.

Well if you have high blood pressure and diabetes and get Pneumonia and die two weeks later they put the cause of death as Pneumonia. Covid is the same way.

they lump covid and pneumonia together though

It has been a while since I messed with medical coding but if I recall, there can be up to 20 cause of deaths entered. There are thousands of death codes. It is more common than not there are multiple causes of death. Here for example are codes just related to Tuberculosis...

A16 "Respiratory tuberculosis, not confirmed bacteriologically or histologically"
A16.2 "Tuberculosis of lung, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A16.3 "Tuberculosis of intrathoracic lymph nodes, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A16.4 "Tuberculosis of larynx, trachea, and bronchus, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A16.5 "Tuberculous pleurisy, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A16.7 Primary respiratory tuberculosis without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation
A16.8 "Other respiratory tuberculosis, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A16.9 "Respiratory tuberculosis unspecified, without mention of bacteriological or histological confirmation"
A17 Tuberculosis of nervous system
A17.0 Tuberculous meningitis
A17.1 Meningeal tuberculoma
A17.8 Other tuberculosis of nervous system
A17.9 "Tuberculosis of nervous system, unspecified"
A18 Tuberculosis of other organs
A18.0 Tuberculosis of bones and joints
A18.1 Tuberculosis of genitourinary system
A18.2 Tuberculous peripheral lymphadenopathy
A18.3 "Tuberculosis of intestines, peritoneum, and mesenteric glands"
A18.4 Tuberculosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue
A18.5 Tuberculosis of eye
A18.6 Tuberculosis of ear
A18.7 Tuberculosis of adrenal glands
A18.8 Tuberculosis of other specified organs

You would think the 12% increase in deaths over recent years is all caused by bad police.

Years from now, maybe they will tell us what the exact correct response that balances economics and health safety should have been. Covid or otherwise, deaths are up significantly. Most of those have been older people or people with other conditions that put them at risk.

Hopefully, as the months go on, the political nature of this will calm and scientists will know more.

Something I’m curious about - will we see a period with deaths below expected levels now? IOW - did COVID simply bring forward by months the deaths of a lot of people already in a bad way.

Unfortunately this could be the case but be masked by lockdown deaths.

Well here is the other side of it. Say a normal year is 1.7 million deaths for that time period shown and we get some type of vaccine.

What if next year's numbers are 1.5 million then all you have really done is thin the head a little for people that possible had less than a year or two left anyway.
