U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday he is elevating LSU’s corps of cadets program and granting the university a new military designation.

LSU will be made a Distinguished Military College, a newly revived federal designation that offers graduates of its Reserve Officer Training Corps program priority in becoming a commissioned military officer, Hegseth announced at his State of the Force address at the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia.

Despite their flamboyant attire, the Tiger Rifles from Louisiana were a hard-drinking bunch of dangerous fighters, feared by many, even on their own side.

Congrats LSU

Very glad to see this news! Prior to LSU dropping its requirements for freshman and sophomore male students to participate in the ROTC program (it was required at all Land and/or Sea Grant universities until 1964), the Corps of Cadets at The Ole War Skule was the crown jewel of the 4th Army District. (A&M earned honorable mention with their outstanding Cavalry unit in the same district.)

This is a pretty big deal, folks.

Way to go, LSU ROTC.

The main reason why Stonewall Jackson's favorite shock troops for charging entrenched enemy positions was the La. folks is because Stonewall didn't want to feel heat for getting a bunch of Virginia soldiers killed.

At first, Stonewall wasn't sure how fierce these Tigers could be. He grew to be very impressed with them.

But, to clarify the record for the NCAA and SEC front offices, LSU's athletic teams are named after the animal Bengal Tiger from India.
