This quote kind or irritated me:
quote:

The disparities that remain also can’t be explained by differences in cognitive ability, an argument made by people who cite racial gaps in test scores that appear for both black boys and girls. If such inherent differences existed by race, “you’ve got to explain to me why these putative ability differences aren’t handicapping women,” said David Grusky, a Stanford sociologist who has reviewed the research.
Well first of all, there is this a thing in statistics called an interaction, so the fact that the disparities between males and females is different may just mean that there is an interaction by gender.

And although it doesn’t appear to include a measure of cognitively ability in the study, there are a number of controls that are number of variables that were used as controls that are correlated and believed to be a results of (income) ability.

So it’s just asinine to look at the gender differences and somehow ignore the gender variable itself and instead question a predictor variable that doesn’t seem to even be directly included.

Edit: In fact his most recent tweet from 3 days ago is about gender inequality, so the fact that he doesn’t consider that when reviewing a study about racial inequality is pretty telling.

Also amazed at the NYT’s blatant disregard for the cisgendered.

Want me to take your scientific claims seriously? “Data” is plural. If you can’t get the headline right,
This is true, but in fairness to the authors, I think the headlines are often provided by an editor or someone above them. So while academic writing styles usually require it to be used in the plural form, apparently this isn't the case in some news publications.

Data are or data is?
quote:

So, over to Guardian style guru David Marsh, who makes the rules in these parts about language use. He says:

It's like agenda, a Latin plural that is now almost universally used as a singular. Technically the singular is datum/agendum, but we feel it sounds increasingly hyper-correct, old-fashioned and pompous to say "the data are".
quote:

And the Guardian style guide expresses it like this:

Data takes a singular verb (like agenda), though strictly a plural; no one ever uses "agendum" or "datum"

Average black IQ is 85? Damnnnnn
IQ tests have become much better in recent years with more advanced statistical modeling and there are now empirically-validated theories.

The average Black IQ score on the most recent tests are more like 90-92 about 10 to 12 points lower than the average white IQ score.

They should control for single-parent families and see what the results are.
