couldn’t make this stuff up if you tried

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the creation of a gun violence czar to address violent crime over the upcoming summer.

In an executive order issued on Thursday, Adams named Andre Mitchell, a former felon and local anti-gun violence activist, to the post — Chair of the Mayor’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force — on a volunteer basis. Mitchell is the founder of an organization, ‘Man Up!’ that was formed to stop shootings in urban communities. He founded the group after serving a prison sentence for first-degree manslaughter in 1992.

Man Up!’ has also been under investigation for misuse of municipal funding by city officials. A report by the City’s Office of Investigations in 2019 found serious “irregularities” in the group’s handling of city funds, of which it has received over $25 million since 2010. Another investigation targeting Mitchell, personally, found that he’d used the non-profit’s funds for personal expenses and employed family members in remunerative positions. His daughter was appointed the group’s ‘Director of Administration,’ making $65,000 a year, while his son was a program instructor making $30,000 a year.

Why is there such a stigma against former felons? If they served their time, they should be free to live their lives without it following them around.

Has nothing to do with his previous crimes. Big difference in killing and stealing.

I don't get why it's his identifier, like a title, "former felon".

Would you prefer "once and future felon"?

His first recommendation should be a midnight basketball league. And the budget will be $2 billion

I don’t understand the outrage. He made a mistake and served his time. Is he not allowed to contribute to society now?

I’m gonna drop a couple of child molestors off on your street since they’ve paid their dues and their past shouldn’t follow them around anymore

Was he convicted of possessing firearms illegally? I don’t understand the joke?

He was convicted of felony manslaughter in NYC.

You think he had that gun legally?
Myopic.

I’m not, but he’s dead wrong. Guns aren’t killing their communities, criminals are.

Considering the mayor was recorded using racial slurs at an event, nothing he does surprises me.

If my dog bites you once when your back is turned, are you going to trust him to not bite you again? If you know someone who was convicted of child molestation and served their time, are you going to trust them to babysit your kid?

They did their time to our legal system.

That doesn't mean a fricking thing to me.

He has paid his debt to society so it doesn’t matter to me. If you believe people deserve life sentences for every crime, maybe America isn’t country for you.
