I went to Zimbabwe back when they were still using the US dollar as their currency. After about an hour cab ride from the local airport to the lodge, I tipped the driver $15 US and he started to tear up, repeatedly saying thank you. The concierge(South African) at the lodge then asked me how the ride was, and I told him about the extremely thankful cab driver and the $15 dollar tip. He laughed and said "I bet he was thankful, you just tipped him about the average monthly salary here in Zimbabwe."
