"No tax on tips!"

Cool! Now I don't have to feel cheap dropping my tip from 20% to 15%.

You think labor is cheap, but you need a small army to run a restaurant. Cooks, dishwashers, hosts, servers, bartenders, admin, cleaning crew, etc.

All making minimum wage or passed on directly to the consumer.

Overhead (rent, bills, insurance) is about a third

Every company has this.

Bought in bulk and cheap. They aren’t making a run to target when a dish gets broken.

Cheaper than cheap and all running costs should be considered when pricing your product.

Listen…..I’m not asking this question completely blind as to how good joints are run. A lot of my best friends through the years work at restaurants and I know a couple different owners. Some are keeping their heads afloat and the more successful ones still aren’t doing any better than your average entrepreneur.

How are restaurants in other countries that pay a respectable wage making money while ones here would close within months if forced to do so?

I never could figure how a bar goes bankrupt. The markup is insane and the overhead seems low. Is it just epically piss poor management?

It’s the only thing I can think of.

Just tip them in cash and let them make their own decision on how they want to proceed.

…that is a stupid policy irrespective of who came up with it. As long as we tax income, income is income, and, if we say tips are not taxable, then it will result in manipulation by moving compensation from wages to tips.

Now, if it results in Trump winning Nevada, then great. I still don’t want it to become law.

When I prepare taxes, then I’ll just call it all tips while paying full taxes on my W2 income.

Yeah lets make minimum wage 100hr instead

I didn't say anything crazy like that. But should a waitress make $3/hr. They should make a higher wage (note I am not saying a fry cook at BK should make $25/hr) and then tipping would only be for outstanding service.
