Here's the problem with paying them. Yes most SEC, Big 10, etc large conference players are there to get drafted. What about the guys going to ULL, ULM, Troy, Stephen F Austin, etc? Most of them won't even be invited to training camp and they know it. They are more than likely there for a free degree that they can use to get a real job with. You would have to pay them the same as the star players in major conferences even though they are worth less and bring in less money. What if the school can't afford to pay them? They would have to cut other sports, likely baseball, basketball, or soccer. That's less scholarships and less people having an opportunity to go to college

I taught at one of the schools you listed, probably 95% of the players on their football roster had no business being in college based on their academic ability. The remaining 5% could have found other methods to fund their education without football such as loans, just like any other student that can actually perform at the academic level needed to attend college. This is not a unique situation, the idea that a main role of college football is providing a path to a college degree for those that otherwise could not obtain one is just a fairytale.

. If you think talent pool dictates demand, take a look at the minor leagues in baseball.
and they're not followed like major league teams... If talent pool doesn't dictate demand, then why is LSU followed over the rest of the in-state college football teams, with the odds that one is closer to most people than Baton Rouge is?

Your comments are incredibly off base with reality.

The NCAA has something that league will never have...market share. It's the fandom that comes with the NCAA that provides the revenue generation. If you think talent pool dictates demand, take a look at the minor leagues in baseball.

I’m not saying that league will instantly be able to compete with the NCAA. But I am saying that the first time a nationally-recruited, big-name recruit says screw scholarships, food, and room/board, I’m getting paid to play in a league whose sole purpose to get me into the NFL, all the other big time recruits will at least entertain the option. And that’s all that league needs. And once they get one of players drafted in the first round of the NFL, it’ll really shake up the whole system. The NCAA will be forced to let players be paid.

And of course the NCAA has the built-in fandom of the schools’ alumni, but alumni don’t represent the majority of college football fans—non alumni do. And it’s largely geographic. So ppl in Georgia rout for UGA even if they didn’t go there. Same for LSU and most big name schools. So if the development league was based on geography, it might create a fandom. Imagine a league where the best HS players from LA were on a team, the best from Miss were on a team, and so on. You have 6-8 teams within the SEC footprint based on where the player went to HS. I’d be willing to bet that that would attract some viewers.

A developmental league would work fine...especially if it is feeding the NFL. You dont need 50 teams...maybe just 10 with 100 player rosters.

That's kinda what happens with soccer. Small clubs discover a player and develop them, then later sell them to a bigger club.
