Russia’s increasingly active submarine fleets in the Atlantic and Arctic have the Trump administration scrambling to respond amid fears that miles of underwater fiber-optic cables that crisscross the ocean floor transmitting the Pentagon’s most sensitive military secrets could be at risk.
But with an aging submarine fleet and growing threats from North Korea and elsewhere, the Navy risks overstretching its submarine fleet in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasingly challenging U.S. security interests, and his submarine fleet’s “operational tempo is reaching Cold War-era levels,” said Magnus Nordenman, director of the Transatlantic Security Initiative at the Washington-based Atlantic Council. “Clearly, there is more attention being paid by the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic due to the Russian threat.”

Lol, sounds like alarmism to get pentagon more money for communications security.

Russians cutting those lines would be an act of war and would not be hard to figure out they did it.

And our subs are greater in number and tech than the soviet ones

"growing threats from North Korea and elsewhere"
So a country on the other side of the world with no navy and an obsolete air force is threat.

It probably is; let's face it our boat drivers haven't been the best lately

Its more splicing and monitoring like the NSA rather than outright cutting them

They wouldn’t cut the lines they would install a device that lets them view traffic passing through. We’ve done it to them before.

I agree about our disproportionate advantage but the Pentagon desperately needs better communication and network security.

OPM was a disaster of untold consequence.

You know what solves this: move troops out of Europe so we aren't transmitting shite to them.

You know what that means? That means we should STOP TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR SECURITY OF EVERY SEA LANE EVERYWHERE. Not spend more money. Cut your strategic goals to what you have money for.

How about NATO start shouldering some of this?

quote:

China and Russia, both with modern nuclear-powered fleets that rival the U.S. fleet, have 68 subs and 63 subs, respectively.

Ok.

quote:

The U.S. has 70 nuclear-powered submarines: 52 attack subs, four cruise-missile-armed subs and 14 ballistic missile subs. Fourteen are patrolling the world’s waterways.

Ok. How about Britain? France? Germany? Norway? Is it just us? Why do we need NATO again?

quote:

Navy leaders are looking to expand the underwater fleet in the budget for the 2019 fiscal year, which starts in October. President Trump’s budget proposal released Monday includes a Pentagon request for one new Columbia-class nuclear attack submarine as part of its $194 billion total.

The Navy wants to buy two of the newest version of the Virginia-class fast attack submarines, according to the service’s proposal. It remains unclear how much of the Navy’s submarine procurements will be designated for surveillance operations, Mr. Nordenman said.

There's the ask.

Exactly. Russia has only built like 2 legit attack subs in the last 15 years. Meanwhile we're pumping out Virginia class boats and will be starting on the Ohio class replacement (Columbia class) missile subs soon.

frick a Russia. We have the greatest submarine fleet ever assembled.

It is difficult enough to splice into existing fiber-optic cables. To do so at the bottom of the ocean?

I would imagine our Navy could cause greater harm to Russia and its interest than they to ours if they want to go there.

And can we get some new and more interesting boogie men please. Russia and NK again? Say perhaps radical Samoans or Cthulhu cultist etc.

As a former submariner, I can assure you it absolutely is.

The CNO is the former head of Naval Reactors. He was selected as CNO to specifically push for and acquire money for the replacement of the Ohio class subs.

This is some of that.

Jesus, our primary and secondary methods of tracking are not sub on sub, that article is garbage.

Silent. Stealthy. Lethal.

quote:

6 new stealth submarines in the fleet, nicknamed “black holes” because they are so hard to detect.

China and Russia, both with modern nuclear-powered fleets that rival the U.S. fleet, have 68 subs and 63 subs, respectively.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with the Frankfurt Allgemeine and other news outlets in December, said the Kremlin is investing heavily in its submarine fleet, with 13 delivered since 2013.

Cutting the lines isn't the issue. Spy subs are.

NSA has been splicing cables at the bottom of the ocean for over 20 years. They use Navy subs to do it.

This came out a number of years ago by accident. This article explains it: LINK

There have only been a few subs that could perform a mission like that. The Parche was a highly decorated boat that could do all kinds of super secret shite. She has been replaced by the Jimmy Carter. It's not like there are tons of spy subs out tapping into cables.

IF that article has any truth to it, then the Parche would have been the only boat at that time that had the capability to do it.

The going thought in sub circles is that the Jimmy Carter did it recently when she pulled back in with the Jolly Roger flying a few months ago.
