Nope, I know it’s confusing but what you’re describing is 1st cousins once removed.
1st cousins means you both share one set of grandparents, 2nd cousins means you both share one set of great grandparents. 3rd cousins means you both share one set of great great grandparents.
It’s not that hard to see how in a rural area you could get married (or far enough along along you just don’t care) unknowingly with a 3rd cousin because it’s likely you never discuss those people and few people would remember them any way. I would imagine second cousins figure it out before they get married though.

I don’t know their ages. But usually there is a generation (or close) between you and you second cousins.
3rd cousins should be much closer in age.
Not exactly.
The easiest way to explain it is this:
You share a common pair of grandparents (male / female): you are 1st cousins
You share a common pair of great grandparents: you are 2nd cousins
You share a common pair of great great grandparents: you are 3rd cousins
And so on, and so on.
A child of your 1st cousin is your 1st cousin once removed.
A child of your 2nd cousin is your 2nd cousin once removed.

To put this in perspective, I had great grandparents die in the 1920s, and a couple of my great great grandparents died before 1900’s. So, if you’re in you 50’s in a small town you could be married to a 3rd cousin and not even know it. That’s why I married someone from somewhere else, just in case

I looked this up very recently.
First cousin marriage is legal in Alabama under certain conditions.
The number of states where first cousin marriage is legal is in the double digits, surprisingly.
