From what I can tell, the Navy didn't think it was BS.

Somehow, the worthless basketball player was more important to bring home than this man. This country is so far beyond fricked up right now.

However, the DOD and SECDEF's handling of this is infuriating.

Why?

You do understand there is a lot going on here other than LT Dumbass.

We need a strong military capability in Japan and it seems routine at this point a sailor or marine has raped or killed a Japanese citizen. Our military presence in Okinawa hangs by a thread.

Sucks for this guy and his family but it appears his negligence killed two people and as soon as his leave runs out he will be coded AWOL and separated.

a servicemember getting arrested in Japan is a different situation than a basketball player getting arrested in Russia.

Our SOFA with Japan gives them jurisdiction over our personnel in criminal matters, so there is no real legal difference.

I "climbed' a portion of Fuji decades ago, it starts off low and is an easy climb but long if you go way to the top, it was filled with school children and old people. If he was with his family he probably didn't get that high and if he was driving he had clearly returned to a low elevation. Don't know how this altitude sickness works, but he walked back down and had not been at a high elevation for a considerable time or when he was actually driving. I can see some reason for skepticism on the part of the judges.

I lived and drove in Japan for a year.

Interesting trivia

In purchasing a car you had to provide proof of ownership of a parking spot

Road taxes doubled every year and about the 6-7 th year the cars would be sold to the phillipine market

It was against the law to abandon a car on your exit from the country, you would be prevented from ever returning

If your car were parked in a legal spot and another car ran into it, you would still be held partially responsible by court. at least 10 %

Driving on the other side, as in England was the design standard.

I was able to purchase a 49 cc scooter, but had to get a driving license conducted in Japanese with much of test associated with how to properly sit on it.

My 11 year old son was arrested and taken to the police station for going to fast on his bicycle

You will hear lots about Japan being a low crime country, yet my car battery was stolen from my front yard.

And best of all, House street numbers were based on when they were built, rather than in sequence going down the street. Most people were eternally lost regardless of elevation sickness

Sure but what are they gonna say? If there is even a 1 in a million chance of it being any sort of contributing factor they are gonna stick up for their soldier.

Ans I'm sure they did, but the SOFA limits exactly what can be done. His family and their possessions will be returned to his Home of Record and they will receive any pay and benefits he was owed.

I'm not familiar with the specifics of this case but the Japanese don't frick around when it comes to driving. Everyone living there knows this. I had a friend that was hit while riding his bicycle there. The family of the man that hit him came to his house and cooked/cleaned etc... until he was out of the cast for a broken leg.

Are we going to pretend there aren't examples all over the place of the exact opposite?
