Stars and Stripes article

Today is the first I have heard of it. Looks like he is most likely wrongly imprisoned, but I dont want to make a judgment call on that. However, the DOD and SECDEF's handling of this is infuriating.
quote:

The Defense Department will deny a plea from Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis to extend his pay and allowances while he serves a three-year prison sentence in Japan, according to U.S. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah on Thursday.

During a speech from the Senate floor, Lee said he spoke Nov. 29 with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin after three weeks of requests for a phone call. Lee said he asked Austin for an update on the request for an exception to policy Alkonis made in June to keep his benefits flowing when his leave runs out at the end of this month.

Without Alkonis’ pay, his wife, Brittany Alkonis, and their children, still living in Japan, would be “kicked to the curb” at Christmastime, Lee, a Republican, said during his 23-minute speech on the Navy lieutenant’s plight.

“Secretary Austin callously informed me that day that the request for the exception to policy would not be granted,” Lee said. “I asked him why. He believed it wasn’t appropriate for the department to do that.”

Lieutenant Alkonis, 34, of Claremont, Calif., was convicted in October 2021 by a three-judge panel in Shizuoka District Court of negligent driving causing the deaths of two people and injuring a third in May 2021 in Shizuoka prefecture. The Tokyo High Court in July upheld his conviction on appeal, and he reported that month to the Tokyo Detention Center to start his sentence.

Is this normal? I would think they’d call a Senator back ASAP. Bet he calls the Dems back quicker

Why should the LT keep benefits for doing time for a crime he committed. Yes it was a medical issue supposedly but he still drove impaired. He will be discharged from the navy and there is no reason they should be extending his pay and allowances. Time for his family to move back to the US and his wife to get a job.

Should the government pay payments to a spouse of someone convicted of vehicular manslaughter?

Based on the medical findings, the Lt shouldn’t be in prison IMO.
Who was his counsel I wonder?

I think it's definitely situationally dependent. the Navy itself determined it to be a medical condition that caused the accident. there is also a reasonable assumption that can be made that this was a political judgment made by a Japanese court. seems like there is enough grey area there to at least keep his benefits going.

Yep. DOD's refusing to provide his wife with his pay under those conditions is absurd and unacceptable --- whether or not his conviction was warranted.

Even when the Navy acknowledges his defense/medical condition as being valid and disputes his conviction?

well, I think that there are extenuating circumstances here that should be considered. it's not like he was driving drunk or even texting and driving. add that to the political nuances regarding Japan, and I think there's certainly at least reason enough to consider keeping his pay going for his family.

His pay should have stopped. The famous saying, “the military doesn’t issue you your spouse”…

Well look at the hypocrites in this thread.

Kill 2 people in Japan, you go to jail. This isn't the USA, it's their laws. Deal with it. Same as smuggling weed into Russia.

a servicemember getting arrested in Japan is a different situation than a basketball player getting arrested in Russia.

Dude fell asleep at the wheel and killed 2 people, he is getting off easy with 3 years. The mountain sickness excuse is BS.
