It's certainly entertaining

GTFO with that reasonable bullshite.
That being said, I think it is unbecoming of a first lady to appear so bitter on a regular basis. Regardless of whatever her life was like 40 years ago, it's pretty fricking awesome right now.

I wish some of these idiots who dislike parents who send their kid to private schools spend some time in New Orleans public schools... then see if they'd feel comfortable sending their kid there if they had a choice...

today, by some measures, our schools are as segregated as they were back when Dr. King gave his final speech,” she said.

that's fricking absurd.
is it?
"...by 2005 the percentage of Black students attending majority White schools in the South had fallen below the level that existed in 1970 to 27% of Black students.5"

did you read the text of her comments.
Completely misrepresented. Its basically say call out your friends and family when they are racist. What the frick is the big deal with that? Sound advice if you ask me.
If you see something or hear something you think is wrong, what are you supposed to do, stay silent?

a little context into why Obama brought race (omgomgomgomg!!) into her speech, from the speech itself:
guys, she was at the school, on the anniversary of Brown v. Board, at a high school in the city where Brown v. Board started, in part to talk about Brown v. Board.
quote:
And finally, to our fantastic student speakers -- Alisha, Rosemary and Noah... thank you so much for your remarks about Brown vs. Board of Ed..
And I think it’s fitting that we’re celebrating this historic Supreme Court case tonight, not just because Brown started right here in Topeka or because Brown’s 60th anniversary is tomorrow, but because I believe that all of you –- our soon-to-be-graduates -– you all are the living, breathing legacy of this case"

These particular comments? No. But there is certainly an established pattern in her comments on the subject.

There is an underlying assumption here with respect to the audience that I find troubling.

this is the craziest thing about this whole thread. Obama says outright that the government can't police racism, it's up to the individuals to stop the spread of it.
i thought the people on this board were all about personal responsibility in place of government interference.

I suggest you read them, they are rather innocuous When grandpa says a racist joke, tell him so. What is the big deal with that?

which is? we have different world views.

Herein lies the problem. Of course it was different, but so was mine. You seem to assume hers had to be worse b/c of her race. That assumption is one of the main reasons we are where we are today and why we can't fix it.

That they have friends and family that are racist and that the best way to deal with those racists is for children to call them out on it.

Where do you think the first lady starts counseling racists first,Trinity United or 1600 Pennsylvania?

a) everyone has a degree of prejudice
b) I happen to agree with her, the best way to stop racism is to raise self awareness.

I assume hers to be worse because of her own comments about it.
ETA: And the fact that mine is pretty awesome.

As much as I agree with your point, I hate these dumb nicknames for Obama, Michelle, Reid, etc.
