I’m 47 and lived here. 100% accurate. They hit the break right at the curve of the tunnel like they think the Road Runner painted the opening to fool them.

What kind of bridge is this going to be?
cable suspension off of two towers - 285 feet at the roadway to accomodate the largest super sized cargo ships on the river; 400 or so top of towers I believe

cost is already estimated at 1.2 billion inclusive of bridge, approachways, and bayway to finish the 8 miles across Mobile Bay just below the delta

it crosses one of the most biodiverse river deltas in the world, two major rivers, the Tombigbee and the Alabama that braid through over 40 miles in length

I would pay a higher toll just to get on the bridge and touchdown after the bay.

Yeah but this bridge helps white people get to the beach so it was excluded from the infrastructure bill. Had to be a racist bridge to be in it

I feel like the real hang up was that the state wanted to make this as a toll roadway because the bay area residents were the real vocal advocates for this bridge to alleviate congestion for daily commuters.

And that hang up was less about the residents not wanting a toll but more because every municipality, department, and agency wants a piece of the tills. ALDOT really wants all the money but the enforcement involves vehicle registration suspensions therefore Alabama Department of Revenue must get involved. However vehicle registrations are only remitted from the Alabama resident to the state via a county or city licensing official. The revenue people aren't interested unless they get some money for their trouble. The cities and counties definitely aren't motivated to enforce unless they get some money out of it too. Etc, etc, etc.

I believe they FINALLY got that all figured out over the last few years. I'm sure there were some EPA surveys and such but truly the biggest hangs up on this were less about the engineering.

A big, beautiful bridge. One of the best, no, the best bridge you've ever seen.

100% going to be the most expensive project ALDOT has ever done only to be beaten by the next big project involving a bridge.

You never traveled east after 330 through tunnel??? Or west either?

Oh yeah, its bad

What a lot of people don't realize is that about 10 to 15% of the traffic "gets smart" and attempts cutting through town and catching the old Bankhead tunnel spreading the total jam throughout downtown Mobile

The short cut is worse. Somebody must have used it successfully 30 years ago or something, but you are doing yourself no favor.

Going east in the morning then west in the evening is your best bet - favoring people who commute to day shift in Eastern Shore from Mobile

Yes I have. I lived there for 7 years then moved to destin where I still had WKRG 5 and Fox10 and every single time their traffic report came on, there was zero traffic. I used to always laugh about it

Sure.. if there is a wreck, the traffic sucks but that does not justify spending all of that money on this stupid bridge. It’s a waste of money because Mobile does not have a traffic problem at all compared to major cities and cities that are the same size like a Tallahassee, St Petersburg, Birmingham, Fort Lauderdale, etc

IMO, Doesn't need to be that tall since the turning basin is down river and a Panamax only clears the top of the Bankhead Tunnel by 6".

Stay ignorant in Destin...there's a backup every afternoon back to Michigan ave. Just because Simone doesn't report it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Have we yet reached the point where we, as a collective national majority, can all openly admit what a fricking absolute disaster Pete Buttplug was as TS? I cannot recall, in my lifetime, any single cabinet member who utterly failed so astonishingly at even the basics of their job.

Mayorkas, Joe, Kamala, and Blinken come to mind. There’s too many from that era to remember or list.

that's not traffic - stop trying to act like Mobile is important - it's not... and it's most defiantly not for a multi billion dollar bridge. Again.. I lived in Mobile for 7 years and I know the area very well and Mobile does not have a traffic problem
