At the end of the day Hollywood is Hollywood, but a good case study on what families are looking for. Still waiting for someone to jump in with investigations and class action lawsuits against Disney for violations of fiduciary responsibility.

Box Office: ‘Minions: Rise of Gru’ Takes Off With Huge $10.8M in Previews

quote:

Illumination and Universal’s July 4th event movie Minions: The Rise of Gru began landing in select North American theaters Thursday afternoon, grossing an excellent $10.8 million in previews from 3,350 locations.

quote:

Tracking suggests that Minions 2 will open in the $70 million to $80 million range for the four-day holiday, but the strength of previews means it could well come in higher. It is also making a major push overseas. The pic scored the biggest preview number of the pandemic era for an animated film or a live-action/CGI hybrid such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which earned $6.3 million in previews on its way to a strong domestic debut of $72.1 million in April of this year. The first Minions opened to $115 million domestically over the July 10-12 weekend in 2015 after grossing $6.2 million in previews.

Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Opening Weekend Struggling to Outpace ‘Jurassic World Dominion’

quote:

Infinity isn’t a practical milestone at the box office, so Disney’s “Lightyear” will have to settle for a $20.7 million opening day and beyond. Pixar’s spinoff of its “Toy Story” series blasted off on Thursday night with a respectable $5.2 million from preview screenings. However, the film is now tracking for an opening in the range of $50 million to $55 million from 4,255 theaters in North America, below the initial expectations that pegged the film for a debut between $70 million and $80 million. What’s more, “Lightyear” is struggling to unseat Universal’s “Jurassic World Dominion” from the top slot of domestic charts during the dino-sequel’s sophomore weekend.

Reminder 1273 that people go to the movies as an escape from reality. I don't care what your values are, as long as you don't push them on me

Tim Pool's theory is that since liberals aren't having anywhere near the amount of children conservatives are, progressives in places of power are freaking out and are pushing influential corporations like Disney to "groom" children of conservative parents to think more like progressives.

Because more often than not you embody the values instilled in you by your parents.

Never a good idea to insult your fan base and try to shame them into buying your product..

Even more so coming out of an over two year pandemic were many theaters were shut down.

And faced with challenging economic times where people are going to be more choosy in how they spend their money…

That's got to be an underrated milestone.
Little kids reaction to the Big Screen has got to be awesome.

I can't wait to take my son to the movies once he's a toddler.

Wife and I took our 8- and 6-year old to Minions yesterday - great movie, enjoyable for kids and adults. We won’t be seeing Lightyear even on streaming. Amazing that some folks just want to see a message-free movie - crazy concept for Disney apparently.

Brought my daughter last night to watch Gru and his Minions. Glad someone is still producing kids movies without pushing a sinful agenda.
ETA: saw several members of our church in there as well. Glad we can all still enjoy a movie with our children every once in a while.

Seems to run counter-productive to Disney's core businesses that cater to children and family.

Turn children gay, then eventually, not enough children to sustain the reason oof your existence. Sounds like a solid business plan.

I used to have the same mindset. Problem is, when you allow certain things to go on that go against your values and principles no matter how seemingly minor, there will never be enough. They'll always want more... and more... and more. Remember when "gays" just wanted to get married just a few years ago? I didn't care if they did back then but now sexuality is being pushed everywhere, drag freaks are reading stories to kids and anyone can be whatever gender they choose to be or not to be. Eventually, they will ALWAYS push their views if they are allowed to. And if you think or say anything against it, you're the intolerant bigot.

Personally, I’m going to see this one to laugh my arse off. The “Despicable Me” movies are hilarious.

My oldest son's first movie was star wars episode 1. Even he knew that was trash.

Was a good family movie with nothing controversial. Only negative was two woke Dove commercials during the previews, one about hair discrimination and the other was either body wash or lotion (didn’t really take note of the product) with a random assortment of characters either in the shower or prancing around in their drawers.

The Minions Sequel is Taking the Box Office By Storm, Prepare Yourselves

quote:

As reported by Variety, the film’s expected to lock in an Independence Day four-day record of $129.2M before the holiday weekend is said and done. Right now, its $108.5M gross (at time of writing) for a typical three-day weekend already makes it the highest domestic start for an animated film since Frozen 2 back in 2019. It also has a pretty good chance of becoming Illumination’s highest domestic opener ever, should it beat the $115.7 three-day open of the original Minions back in 2015.

I'm actually in the theater waiting for it to come on now. Kids said they wanted to see Lightyear.

Told them absolutely not.

Minions: Rise of Gru Smashes Fourth of July Box Office Record with $125M Opening Minions: Rise of Gru earned the Independence Day weekend record after beating the previous record holder: 2011's Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon

quote:

After the movie's premiere on July 1, the Illumination and Universal hit made $125.1M during the weekend, earning an Independence Day 4-day opening record according to Deadline. The premiere marked the second best ever opening in all of the Despicable Me/Minions franchise, losing only to 2015's Minions, the outlet reported.

Despite its iconic title character, "Lightyear" hasn't reached infinity and beyond at the box office. As per Forbes, the spin-off film has yet to make back its $200 million dollar budget.

There's been plenty of controversy (via Forbes) around Disney's new movie, "Lightyear." And now Tom Hanks has expressed how he feels about recasting Tim Allen. In a new interview with CinemaBlend, the legendary actor who played Woody in the original "Toy Story" series, said "How about that? I wanted to go head-to-head with Tim Allen and then they didn't let Tim Allen do it. I don't understand that."

Hanks is referring to his own film "Elvis," where he plays the King of Rock and Roll's manager Tom Parker. While "Elvis" and "Lightyear" don't necessarily share the same target demographic, they're currently in theaters at the same time. "Elvis" is ahead of "Lightyear" on Box Office Mojo, at third and sixth place respectively, with the newly-released "Minions: The Rise of Gru" crushing everything in its path.
